In Broward County, responsibility for the secondary system is divided among special drainage and water control districts, municipalities and our county government.

The secondary system discharges water into the primary system operated by the SFWMD. The secondary system is comprised of generally smaller canals, pumping stations, storage areas, and other structures that handle incoming water from tertiary systems. Secondary systems can cover many square miles and serve several communities.
