Broward County Library's 35th Anniversary
1974-2009
Libraries have been a source of joy and escape for my entire family. Ever since my children were old enough to sit still, I would read to them. This led to their life-long love of reading. And I have shared this love of reading with my grandchildren whenever they visit. My daughter started them going to the library, as I did with her. So the lesson was passed to the next generation. An avid reader, my husband reads a book within two days. Although I cannot find much time for leisure reading because of the voluminous amount of reading I must do with my work on the County Commission, I have found books on CD offer me an escape while I drive.
I love libraries!

The Readers are Leaders program provides an opportunity for young people to hear stories read to them by local leaders. The goal of this program is that through contact with successful members of the community, these children will be inspired to strive for success. I participated in the program at the Lauderhill Towne Center Library. There, I was greeted by a group of four-year-olds from the New Society Pre School in Sunrise who were excited about the day's events and were eager to learn.
As the children settled down into their "Listening Seats", I looked through a small pile of books to select the one that I would read. In Curious George Goes to the Library, I knew that I had found the perfect choice. In the story, The Man With The Yellow Hat brings Curious George to the library and teaches him about all the wonderful things the he can do there, from checking out books to doing research and making new friends. The Man With The Yellow Hat was giving Curious George an overview of the library, and by doing so, he gave his young friend an overview of the important role that the library plays in their community.

As I read through the book I showed each picture to the children, and when I looked up, I saw that I had their undivided attention. They hung on every word that I read. Much like the Man With The Yellow Hat, I was teaching these children about some of the ways that they will use the library as they grow older and of the important role that the Broward County Libraries play in our community. Our libraries are places for our youth and our elderly to learn, and places for our residents to meet and discuss common interests. And yes, our libraries are a wonderful place to find a good book to read!
