Alex Haley Collection Debut

The United States Coast Guard presented a plaque on behalf of the USGC Cutter Alex Haley. Group photo with the plaque.  Over 300 people celebrated the 30th anniversary of Roots with the debut of the Alex Haley Special Collection at the African-American Research Library & Cultural Center (AALRCC) on Friday, January 5.

The community celebrated the 30th anniversary of Roots with the debut of the Alex Haley Special Collection at the African-American Research Library & Cultural Center (AARLCC) on Friday, January 5. The collection includes letters, photos and other memorabilia never seen by the public before.

Hundreds of children from local Boys & Girls Clubs were given private tours of this Special Collection beginning at 9:00 a.m., while the official ceremony began at 11:00 a.m. The United States Coast Guard presented a plaque on behalf of the USGC Cutter Alex Haley, which was commissioned in 1999 and named after Haley for his outstanding contributions. The plaque was permanently added to AARLCC's collection.
