Japanese animation is called Anime. In its early years, Anime was strongly influenced by Western animation—particularly Disney cartoons. But in the 21st Century, anime comes in many different forms and styles. Anime story lines include adventure, science fiction, children’s stories, romance, medieval fantasy, horror stories and action movies. Although anime is drawn as a cartoon, it is not always designed for children. Many teens and adults enjoy the more mature anime productions.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of anime is that characters often have large eyes; this feature was influenced by Japanese artist Osamu Tezuka, who was inspired by cartoon characters such as Betty Boop and Mickey Mouse.
The printed form of Anime is called manga. Manga are Japanese graphic novels that go hand-in-hand with anime. Many of the anime films are adapted from the original manga stories. Unlike American comics or graphic novels, manga stories are read Japanese-style, from right to left, top to bottom.
Anime and Magna at the Broward County Library
Anime videos and Manga literature are available at the Main Library and our branch libraries. But even better than offering these materials to the public, Broward County Library holds a yearly Anime Convention and hosts Anime screenings and Manga discussion groups.
Anime/Manga Groups and Programs at the Library
AnimeFest
AnimeFests are held on teacher work days and last 2 to 2.5 hours. Each program usually includes various prizes and giveaways as well as the screening of anime films. The suggested age is 12 and up for the screenings, which feature anime sent monthly by ADV Anime Advocates usually brand new and upcoming anime currently being released in the United States. The AnimeFests usually attempt to show anime that is not available on television in the United States including the different types of anime that aren’t regularly shown on Cartoon Network.
Manga Discussion Group
The Main Library holds a monthly manga discussion group, usually on the first or second Saturday of every month.
In the past, the library has conducted a history of anime program that covers the genres evolution from the 1800s to present. For more information about anime, manga, or graphic novels, you may contact Arlene Garcia at the Main Library who hosts the AnimeFests and manga discussion groups, or consult your local librarian.
