The Art of the Sari at Main Library
August 2008 brought an exquisite and unique exhibit to Main Library's gallery six, The Art of the Sari: An Exhibition of Sari Costumes from Various Regions of India. Colorful, hand-crafted saris artfully displayed in breathtaking vignettes attracted a multi-cultural crowd that was wowed by the beauty and artistry of the flowing, elegant gowns.
As the traditional garb of India, saris come in a wide array of colors, styles and fabrics that often denote the region or status of the wearer. Currently worn by women, saris were, in the past, also donned by Indian men, who called them dhotis and lungi.

Author Event with Easton Lee at South Regional/
BC Library
Well-known Chinese-Jamaican author Easton Lee visited South Regional/Broward College Library in Pembroke Pines on August 16 to read from his latest book Run big 'fraid…other village stories as well as sign copies of the book.
Lee, a product of multi-ethnic and multi-racial Jamaica, grew up behind the counter of his Chinese father's rural grocery. His books and poetry focus on life and lore of "old" Jamaica. His newest collection of "village" stories evoked laughter, tears, and joy in the crowd who gathered to enjoy his wit and wisdom. Miramar City Commissioner Winston Barnes, himself Jamaican, was also on hand as a guest speaker for the event.
