Broward County Library's Summer Reading Program  Florida Center for the Book's Literary Tea with Elaine Viets

2008 Florida Library Youth Program is presented by the Miami Dolphins Foundation, Broward County Library and Broward Public Library Foundation

Summer Reading offers children and teens in Broward County an opportunity to win great prizes, explore the world of books, and become a Most Valuable Reader!  Programs captured the interest of children and teens while instilling the importance of literacy. For more information about Broward County Library's Summer Reading Program, click here.  

Free Systemwide Programs Included the following Special Performers:

  • Windell Campbell is an award-winning teacher and master storyteller with a high-energy style combining puppets and storytelling.
  • Geddy the Gecko, the gecko lizard mascot, offers a fast-paced interactive show, Dances from around the World, where kids learn dances from 8 countries.
  • Holly Cleeland, author of Glue and Go Costumes, teaches kids and parents how to create prize-winning costumes out of household items.
  • Suzy Hammer as Millennia the Muse, a classical Greek character who presents a Magical Myths and Fables program.
  • Suzy Hammer as Safari Sue, who presents African and Adventure Tales with treasure hunts and magic.
  • Suzy Hammer as The Pink Fairy, a delightful comic fairy and, to those children of any age who believe in fairies, she is very special indeed.
  • Suzy Hammer as Salty Sue, a seriously silly pirate who brings music, magic, original tales of the sea and rich pirate lore from Florida history.
  • Darrell House, the musician who makes the audience feel like singin', enchanted all ages as he "performed" his books. House presented music, poems and books, in a fun and interactive show.
  • Puppets to Go is a full-time professional puppet theater company with entertaining, exciting, and exceptional puppet shows for all audiences.
  • Book It! Fantasy Theater Factory. Friends discover reading is not so bad when you put yourself into the action in this cliffhanger presentation that inspires families and children to read, read, read!
  • Sista Idya is pushin' culture, with cultural storytelling and creative movement.
  • Travel to the Orient with Professor Funnybone, ventriloquist extraordinaire, and his newest show "Panda-monium."

Florida Center for the Book presented a Literary Tea on June 10 with bestselling mystery author Elaine Viets, author of Clubbed to Death, at 2pm in the Main Library. Viets spoke to guests about her new book and signed books afterwards.
