The Big Read, a community-wide reading project sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, featured both a novel and a children's book by renowned author Amy Tan. Libraries countywide offered programs and events centered on her novel, The Joy Luck Club, and her children's book, Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat.

From November 1-30, 2007, library customers enjoyed Big Read book and film discussions, cultural programs, panel presentations and even mah jong games. The Big Read for Little Readers celebrated Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat with special story times, crafts and activities, and a Big Book Giveaway at the StoryBook Festival on November 17. Broward County Library's Learning Services also incorporated The Joy Luck Club into their English Café programs for new readers and speakers of English.

The Big Read Kick-off, held at North Regional/Broward College Library, featured performers, artists, guest speakers, refreshments, and free copies of The Joy Luck Club to the first fifty attendees. Other special programs included an introduction to Tai Chi, researching Asian genealogy, a feng shui demonstration, Chinese travel information and writing workshops.
