SELECTIONS FROM THE DIANNE & MICHAEL BIENES BOOK DONATION
December 4, 1996 - January 13, 1997

In December of 1994, Dianne and Michael Bienes generously donated their art book collection to the new Bienes Center for the Literary Arts. In addition to their magnanimous financial support, the gift of a core collection of 647 titles was an important first step in the long-term development of the collections of The Dianne and Michael Bienes Special Collections and Rare Book Library.

The extraordinary book collection consists primarily of art titles covering all periods and countries. Most of the volumes deal with individual artists, including painters, sculptors, designers, graphic artists, and photographers. Major and minor schools and periods of art from classical to modern are well represented. Many titles are catalogue raisonnes or limited editions with extra illustrations, and many are beautifully bound and have slipcases or boxes.

Volumes published in France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and many other foreign countries are also represented in the collection. The donation contains books from the 1800s to the 1990s with the majority having been published since the 1950s. Titles from earlier periods are represented by many fine facsimiles printed in limited editions, and while they are generally not considered rare in the traditional sense, often they are special in that they make information available from unique volumes that would otherwise be inaccessible.

The Bienes' gift complements an already significant collection, and almost overnight has helped to transform Broward County Library into an important regional center for the study of the fine arts. Their willingness to create a sanctuary where the literary arts are cherished, preserved, and celebrated, was a generous and bold gesture that will long continue to enrich the lives of all of the residents of Broward County. Upon the inauguration of the Bienes Center for the Literary Arts, it is entirely appropriate that we honor their generosity with the exhibition Ars Libri: Selections from the Dianne & Michael Bienes Book Donation.
