THE BIG READ for Little Readers
November 1-30, 2007

THE BIG READ, a community-wide reading grant project funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and focusing on Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club, willSagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat book include book and film discussions, cultural programs, panel presentations and Mah Jong games.

THE BIG READ for Little Readers will celebrate Amy Tan’s children’s book Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat with special story times, crafts and activities and a Big Book Give Away at the StoryBook Festival on November 17.

The Joy Luck Club bookBroward County Library Learning Services will also be participating by incorporating The Joy Luck Club into their English Café classes for new readers and speakers of English.

Learn more about Amy Tan, The Joy Luck Club and China’s history with free reader’s guides, bookmarks, and cds available at all library locations.

November 3 - 2pm to 4pm
The Big Read Kick-off
North Regional/Broward Community College Library

Join us for the Big Read Kick-off celebration! There will be performers, artists, speakers, refreshments and free copies of The Joy Luck Club for the first 50 people to arrive at the program.

November 3 - 10am to 1pm
Fact to Fiction Writing Workshop
Main Library

Fee: $40 in advance, $45 at the door
One of the beauties of fiction is how “true” it can be even if it’s not always factual. Using details and events from our lives can enrich our fiction and create a more authentic work. This workshop will look at specific steps for creating fiction from personal experience. In addition, the class will examine how imagery, metaphor and symbolism help create meaning in creative writing.

The Big Read at Miami Book Fair International
Meet the Big Read team at the Street Fair from November 9–11, and while you’re there don’t miss the round table discussion featuring prominent Chinese American authors Ha Jin and Da Chen, who will discuss their work.

The StoryBook Festival
Southwest Regional Library
StoryBook Festival Brings Books to Life Children and their families are invited to a magical world of stories at Broward County Library’s StoryBook Festival, from 10am to 4pm on
November 17, at the Southwest Regional Library, 16835 Sheridan St., Pembroke Pines.

The free festival will feature two stages of live performances, fairy-tale crafts, and strolling storybook characters. The first 1,500 children at the festival will receive a free book.

The library event is being held in conjunction with Children’s Book Week, which is November 12-18.

The StoryBook Festival is funded through the Broward Public Library Foundation with support from the City of Pembroke Pines
and other sponsors.
