THE BIG READ - March & April 2009

THE BIG READ 2009

Florida Center for the Book at Broward County Library will launch its Big Read program in celebration of the classic American novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, with a special kick-off event on Monday, March 23 at 2 p.m. at Bonnet House Museum and Gardens, 900 North Birch Road, Fort Lauderdale.

The Big Read kick-off event will feature a free literary dramatization entitled On Fitzgerald: Three Views by Betty Jean Steinshouer. Free copies of The Great Gatsby will be given to the first 100 people who arrive for the show. Following the show, Bonnet House guides will be on-hand to give tours of Bonnet House Museum and Gardens. Tours will be offered for $10 per person. Please call 954-357-7401 to make reservations for the dramatization.

On Fitzgerald focuses on Willa Cather, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Gertrude Stein, three outspoken writers who loved and influenced F. Scott Fitzgerald and his writing. After the performance, Betty Jean Steinshouer will offer a scholarly view of Fitzgerald's relationships with the three writers as well as his relationship with Ernest Hemingway. The audience will also have an opportunity to discuss The Great Gatsby and its place in American Literature.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents the Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.
