Florida Center for the Book at Broward County Library invites all of Broward County to join

The Maltese Falcon March 2008

THE BIG READ, a community-wide reading project funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and focusing on Dashiell Hammett’s classic noir novel, The Maltese Falcon, will include book and film discussions, panel presentations, a noir writing workshop and a fun interactive murder mystery theatre show.

Broward County Library Learning Services will also be participating by incorporating The Maltese Falcon into their English Café classes for new readers & speakers of English. Call Learning Services at 954-625-2847 for more information on English Cafe.

Learn more about Dashiell Hammett, The Maltese Falcon and the development of noir fiction with free reader’s guides, bookmarks, and cds available at all library locations. Check your local library for program dates & times.

The Arts and Culture Advisory Board proudly presents the 10th anniversary of the annual Art Festival in the Pines. The festival showcases many foods, live music, an art area and demonstrations by local artists. Visit the Big Read booth for give-aways and photo opportunities with characters from The Maltese Falcon.

Are you an aspiring writer? Or an appreciative reader? The Writers’ Network of South Florida is offering authors of dark mysteries an opportunity to present the opening pages of your short story or novel. Your work will be critiqued by writers and potential readers …and you’ll have the opportunity to compete for a prize of $50. The number of presenters will be
limited to the first eight writers who call 954-476-7060 to reserve a spot. Each entrant will be limited to the first 500 words. The winning author will be determined by secret ballots submitted by members of the audience. The first 30 people in the audience will receive a free
copy of The Maltese Falcon.

Dashiell Hammett on the Radio
Main Library  March 27  7pm
Dashiell Hammett’s “The Maltese Falcon”, featuring Sam Spade and the “The Thin Man” were made into successful motion pictures. Less well known are adaptations of Mr. Hammett’s work on network radio in the 1940s and 50s. Come and listen to selected scenes from “The Maltese
Falcon” - with Humphrey Bogart reprising his Sam Spade movie role and listen to Howard Duff’s interpretation of Sam in “The Adventures of Sam Spade”.

21st Century Noir Writing Workshop with Lynne Barrett
Main Library  March 29  10am – 1pm. Fee: $40
Originating in the Hardboiled fiction of the 30s and Film Noir of the 40s, Noir has had a resurgence in recent years, in magazines, anthologies, and novels, as well as in television and film. In this workshop we’ll look at the tradition of Noir and the ways that contemporary writers can both draw on and rewrite the genre’s characters, plotting, use of setting, and exploration of morality and identity. We’ll talk about what makes a strong crime story, how to construct them, and markets.

Winner of the Edgar Award for best mystery short story, Lynne Barrett is the author of The Secret Names of Women and The Land of Go. Recent stories appear in Miami Noir, A Hell of a Woman, A Dixie Christmas, and One Year to a Writing Life. She teaches in the MFA
program at Florida International University and is Editor of The Florida Book Review.

The Maltese Falcon Movie Screening and Discussion 
March 29 at 7pm  Cinema Paradiso
The first 50 people arrive at Cinema Paradiso for this special screening will receive a free copy of The Maltese Falcon.
