History comes alive this month at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), a state-of-the-art community facility that is one of only three libraries of its kind in the United States. Located on historic Sistrunk Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale, AARLCC is a full-service lending library as well as a cultural, recreational and educational hub for the entire community.
In addition to its circulating collection, AARLCC also offers Special Collections - unique acquisitions that highlight art, literature, drama, music and more.
With AARLCC's Special Collections you can step back in time to hear the music of the Harlem Renaissance, listen to pioneer stories told by Ft. Lauderdale's early African-American settlers, view international works of art, read an unpublished manuscript of author Alex Haley or hold the Emmy Award of actress Esther Rolle.

Special Event: The SANKOFA: African American Museum on Wheels, one of the finest museum collections of African American history in the country, will be on display at Southwest Regional Library for one day, Tuesday, February 28, 2007, 12-7 p.m., in celebration of diversity and Black History Month. The exhibit features over 25 display tables containing artifacts that span the history of African Americans in the U. S. from 1860 to the present on a journey through slavery, the era of King Cotton, and the uplifting days of Emancipation. The display features the stories of such notable African Americans as Ida B. Wells, the Negro Baseball League, the Tuskegee Airman and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition, the museum provides a unique display of inventions by African Americans.

Feb. 3 - For Black History Month, documentary screening: "The Underground Railroad." This documentary traces the journey to freedom taken by countless slaves, showing how they were guided, protected, and pursued along the way. Light refreshments, 2 to 5 p.m.
Feb. 17 - For Black History Month, documentary screening: "The Highwaymen: Florida's Outsider Artists." The Highwaymen was a group of young, untrained African-American landscape painters from the small central Florida town of Fort Pierce who, in the late 1950's and early 1960's, were prevented by segregation from selling their paintings in traditional art galleries. Light refreshments, 2 to 3 p.m.
Feb. 17 - For Black History Month, documentary screening: "American Experience: Citizen King." Tapping into a rich archive of photographs and film footage and using diaries, letters, and eyewitness accounts of fellow activists, friends, journalists, political leaders and law enforcement officials, this film brings fresh insights to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s impossible journey, his charismatic leadership and his truly remarkable impact. Light refreshments, 3 to 5 p.m.
Feb. 22 - For Black History Month, discussion: The Niagara Movement. Kisha King, social science professor at Broward Community College, presents a discussion of the Niagara Movement, an early 20th century civil rights organization founded by prominent African-Americans that eventually provided the basis for the establishment of the NAACP. Light refreshments, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Feb. 24 - For Black History Month, Literary Cinema & Movie: "Their Eyes Were Watching God," Zora Neale Hurston's best-known novel set in central and southern Florida in the early 20th century. Book discussion follows the movie. Light refreshments, 2 to 5 p.m.
