Black History Month - February 2009

Celebrate Black History Month @ your Broward County Library.

History comes alive this month at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), a state-of-the-art community facility that is one of only three libraries of its kind in the United States. Located on historic Sistrunk Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale, AARLCC is a full-service lending library as well as a cultural, recreational and educational hub for the entire community.

February 7 -  An Afternoon with Alexis Caputo, (Performance Artist/Poet/Writer/Activist), 2pm. Alexis Caputo is a New York/Florida based Performance Artist, poet, writer and activist. (www.alexiscaputo.com). In honor of Black History Month, Ms. Caputo will be sharing excerpts from four of her written works: Truths Carved from the Belly, Woman of the Drum, The Proud Pilgrim and Deconstruction & Deliverance. Her performance will include poetry, spoken word, movement and the use of iconic symbols and images used in depicting African-American life and culture through media images.

February 15 -  Film: King: Man of Peace in a time of War. A fascinating and revealing look at the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. filtered through the prism of three major conflicts: the struggle between black and white America, divisiveness with the civil rights movement itself, and an undeclared war in Vietnam. A salute to a man who remains an inspiration and a force for social change nearly forty years after his death at age 39, 2 to 3pm. Celebrating Black History Month.
