Business
The Business area of the Business, Law, and Government (BLG) Services Section, located on the fifth floor of the Broward County Main Library, houses a collection of reference books on many topics relating to business. Circulating books on these subjects are located on the fourth floor of the Broward County Main Library.
Among the holdings of the BLG Section are company directories, demographic and statistical publications from commercial and governmental sources, investment newsletters, and online business databases.
Types of Information
Career and Employment Information
BLG has a Career and Job Information area that includes publications that aid in choosing careers and finding job leads. Materials offering information on working conditions, education and training requirements, starting salaries, employment trends, and resume writing are also available. One-hour appointments for assistance in using the materials may be scheduled with a librarian.
International Trade Materials
BLG provides a variety of import and export information, including Stat-USA, an online database from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Although selected
information from the database may be accessed on the web at www.stat-usa.gov, this database may be viewed in its entirety only by visiting the BLG Section of the Broward County Main Library.
Investment Services
In addition to Value Line and Morningstar, a collection of business and investment newsletters, including Dick Davis Digest, Dines Letters, and Dow Theory Letter, is available in the BLG Section. Retrospective collections of Value Line Investment Survey, Morningstar Mutual Funds, and Mergent Manuals (formerly Moody's Manuals) are available for historical research. Online investment information is available through the Business and Company Resource Center database.
Small Business
The BLG Section provides resources on all aspects of starting a small business and expanding an existing business. Print resources include current titles in the areas of planning, accounting, finance, marketing, management, and personnel. (Circulating copies of some of the print sources may be found on the fourth floor of the Main Library.) Other print resources include a selection of newspapers and magazines related to small business. Computer resources include general business databases plus software programs for writing business plans as well as Quickbooks for accounting. Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Pagemaker, and Dreamweaver are also available. In addition, a wide variety of seminars on special business topics and issues are held each month.
Free one-on-one counseling for entrepreneurs, is provided, by appointment only, by volunteers from the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and by certified business analysts of Florida's Small Business Development Center at Florida Atlantic University (FAU-SBDC). Tax Information
Tax information from governmental and commercial sources is also available on the fifth floor of the Main Library. This information includes legal publications and "how-to" publications. Print sources include tax laws, regulations, forms, and publications, U.S. Tax Court decisions, and the Standard Federal Tax Reporter (from Commerce Clearing House). In addition to print sources, IRS-trained volunteers provide one-on-one tax assistance for basic tax returns, on the fifth floor of the Main Library, between February and April of each year.
Business Journals
The BLG Section houses several newsletters, newspapers, and periodicals relating to small business start-up and expansion; some relating to South Florida and others focusing on minority business enterprise. In addition, the Main Library subscribes to national business journals, such as Business Week and Fortune. These journals are located on the third floor of the Main Library in the Magazines and Newspapers Section.
Business Databases
The library also subscribes to the following business-related reference databases:
- Business and Company Resource Center provides links to full-text articles, from business journals, on a wide variety of business topics. It also provides directory listings and profiles of major companies, with links to periodical articles, investment reports, financials, rankings, suits and claims, products, industry overviews, and associations relating to each company.
- Reference USA provides directory information and company profiles for businesses of all types and sizes throughout the U.S. Lists of companies may be accessed by type of business, geographic area, business size, and many other categories. Both large, public companies and small, private companies are included.
