Upcoming Programs at Northwest Regional Library:

Reach for the Stars: A Story Time for Children with Disabilities, ages 3-10, 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.  This program is held on the fourth Saturday of each month. Upcoming dates are July 25, August 22, September 26, October 24.
 
Game Night for Teens with Disabilities, high school students, 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. This program is held on the third Monday of every month.  Upcoming dates are September 21, October 19, November 16.

Accessible computer software (JAWS and ZoomText): Screen reading software (JAWS) and screen magnification software (ZoomText) for people with vision loss are available at several library locations.

Assistive Listening Devices:  Several library meeting rooms are equipped with assistive listening devices, which amplify sound and minimize background noise for people who have hearing loss. The equipment works with or without the use of a hearing aid.

Descriptive videos: Broward County Library's Books-by-Mail service and Talking Book Library both provide access to videos that include an additional narration track describing visual elements of the program (such as action, characters, costumes, and locations) for the benefit of those who are blind or visually impaired.

DisAbilities Expo: An annual event that provides an opportunity to learn about services, resources, products, and information for persons with various disabilities.

Downloadable books and music

Electronic magnifiers (CCTVs): Available at most library branches, a CCTV system consists of a video camera that projects a magnified image of printed text, handwriting, photos, and more onto a monitor. You can use a CCTV to enlarge the text to read a book or newspaper, write checks, or read a letter or the label on a pill bottle.

FDLRS

No-cost specialized telephone distribution: Florida residents who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind or speech impaired are eligible to receive a specialized telephone at no cost through Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc. Broward County Library works with local agencies to offer distribution of the telephones at various library locations.

Shared Reading Project Kits

Signing Stories @ your library®: A program series for families of deaf or hard of hearing children and those who work with deaf children. Sponsored by Broward County Library in partnership with the Alliance for Families with Deaf Children.

Special services to populations with special needs: See separate listings for Books-by-Mail, FDLRS, and Talking Books.

Talking Books:  This program provides 4-track cassette books, magazines, and other materials that are played on special play-back machines.  Eligibility for the program:  visual, physical, or reading disability.  Items are sent and returned via postage-free mailings; items are provided by the Library of Congress's National Library Service program at no cost to program participants.

TTY/TTD telephones: Text telephones are available at selected libraries for customers to use to make or receive calls. All library branches may be contacted using relay service.

White Cane Safety Day:  Annual event at the Main Library, co-sponsored by the Greater Broward Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind.  This event includes speeches and comments by city and county elected official supporting the goals of equal access to the disabled community.
