Welcome to Broward County Library's eBooks.
eBooks are the latest reading and listening medium, and they are a valuable part of the library's materials collection. Most people think of eBooks as electronic books, books that have been converted from printed text on paper to digital formats that display on computers or specialized reading devices. That is an accurate description of eBooks, but it does not encompass the full range of electronic materials that are found in the library's eBook collection. The Broward County Library eBook collection is comprised of:
Full-content fiction eBooks Full-content eJournals Videos Database Content
Full-content nonfiction eBooks Reference Resources eAudiobooks Other Resources
In addition to the wide array of resources that the library's eBook collection offers, the use of library eBooks offers distinct advantages. To list a few:
- eBooks are produced and transmitted electronically -- less environmental and economical impacts.
- eBooks are browsed online, checked out online -- no physical visits to the library.
- eBooks are returned electronically -- no physical visits to the library, no late fees.
- eBooks are read, listened to, and/or viewed electronically --24/7 availability, in-town or out-of-town.
Presented on these pages are an overview of the library's eBook collection and a use guide for each of the two sections of the collection -- netLibrary and OverDrive. Some topics in the guides are explained step-by-step, which contributes to the length of these pages and may have some customers questioning the ease of use of eBooks. eBooks are user-friendly: Basically, either (1) select, click, and read/view; or (2) select, download, and read/view/listen to. The detailed explanations in the guides are provided to assist in locating and following the actions that display on-screen. With regular use of eBooks, navigation of the eBook sections will become quite automatic.

eBooks Overview
The Broward County Library eBook collection is growing in order to meet the needs of its various customers for expanded availability of library resources. Unlike books in print, audiobooks in cassette and CD formats, and videos in CD format -- all of which require a visit to a library during open hours for check-out and then a visit to a library location for return -- the loan process for eBooks does not require a visit to a library, and the resources are available to customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In addition to expanding the availability of library resources, eBooks offer customers an additional opportunity to CHECK OUT BEING GREEN @ YOUR LIBRARY, to be protective of the planet by sharing resources and reducing the use of paper, ink, and other hard-copy components.
As an electronic process, eBooks incorporate the use of electronic features that hard-copy materials cannot provide. To list just a few: When eBooks are viewed on a computer, search and sort tools can be employed; research can be done while reading an eBook, and the results displayed on-screen side by side with the eBook; text can be highlighted in the eBook; text size can be adjusted; an option is available to craft electronic notes onto eBook pages and store them in personal virtual bookshelves for easy access 24/7.
The eBook collection at Broward County Library is shelved within two virtual sections: netLibrary and OverDrive. There is no charge for the use of materials in either section. Each section has a different concentration of resources, each has a different loan and check-out process, but the biggest difference is in the presentation:
- The netLibrary eBooks are an instant read/view online, on-screen.
- The OverDrive eBooks are read/viewed, or listened to via downloads to computer systems or devices equipped with required software. Except for the videos, which require an Internet connection, the OverDrive items can be used offline, after the download.
Broward County Library's netLibrary section currently contains over 28,000 eBooks plus additional reference resources of encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories, handbooks, thesauri, and more.
- A continuous Internet connection is required to read/view netLibrary eBooks.
- In most cases, no additional software is required.
- In some cases, a customer's computer will not be equipped with viewing software for a particular format. If that is the case, a prompt will appear for an instant download of the software, at no charge.
- netLibrary's strongest coverage is in business, health, history, literature, sociology, and religion.
- A netLibrary eBook can be read on-screen at any Broward County Library during its open hours, using its public computers. Access to the site is open; customers will not be required to enter library card, or any other, information.
- A netLibrary eBook can be read on-screen from any external computer with Internet access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In town or out of town, customers can access the library's Web site, www.broward.org/library, to read eBooks at their leisure, merely entering Broward County Library card information at the point of entry to the netLibrary site.
- There is no loan period for a netLibrary eBook. If it is available for use, the eBook can be accessed online and read one interval of time after another interval of time, day after day.
- Though not necessary for the use of netLibrary resources, a customer can establish a netLibrary account, at no charge, that will enable the use of personalized features.
- For example, the customer can then tag eBook titles as favorites, creating a personal virtual bookshelf of titles that can be easily accessed for quick check-out in the future -- eBooks that are favorite reads, eBooks that contain handy reference information for specific interests, eBooks discovered while browsing but for which there was no time to read immediately, etc.
- Another popular account feature is the notes option that enables customers to craft electronic notes on pages of their favorite eBooks. Since notes are saved with the eBook pages to the customers' netLibrary accounts, not with the eBooks, the notes are available even when the eBooks are not. By connecting to the library's Web site with any computer that has Internet access, customers have access to their notes anytime, anywhere.
Broward County Library's OverDrive section contains different formats of eBooks -- currently, over 400 eBooks, over 1,000 eAudiobooks, and over 100 eVideos.
- An Internet connection is
- necessary for the full loan process for OverDrive videos, as they are a high-speed Internet product.
- only necessary for the check-out process for other OverDrive materials.
- Customers will need to enter Broward County Library card information at the point of check-out.
- When the checked-out eBook has been downloaded to a computer system or device equipped with the necessary software, except for the videos, the OverDrive material can be viewed/listened to offline.
- The specific software that is required to download an OverDrive eBook to a computer system or device is provided at no charge, and is easily downloaded directly from the library's OverDrive Web page. There are three software products; the format of the eBook determines which software is required.
- With a computer system or device that is equipped with the required software, the entire loan process (from selection to check-out to download) for an OverDrive eBook can be done anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- The loan process for an OverDrive eBook can be done piecemeal.
- For example, selection and check-out can be done from a public computer at any Broward County Library during its open hours, or from any external computer, and the download delayed till the borrower is at the computer or device equipped with the essential software.
- The loan period for an OverDrive eBook varies. The videos typically have a 7-day loan period; the other materials typically have a 21-day loan period.
- An eBook is automatically, electronically returned to the library on its due date, at which point the borrower will no longer be able to access the eBook from the computer system or device.
- While browsing the OverDrive collection, customers can click an option to add eBook titles to a wish list attached to their account information, thereby compiling personal browse lists with titles that warrant more consideration in the future or stockpiling titles in the wish list for easy and quick check-out at another time.
Presented on the following pages are use guides for the netLibrary and OverDrive sections of Broward County Library's eBook collection. The information in the guides is also available in the various help areas and tutorials that are offered on the library's netLibrary and OverDrive Web pages.

The following use guide is a compilation of information found on various netLibrary Web pages. The information in the use guide has been arranged in a pattern of typical use, and links have been inserted to enable back-and-forth navigation among the various topics and for jumping to specific areas of interest:
- Each topic and subtopic in the List of Topics is also a link, to enable a jump to that section in the use guide.
- The web browser's Back button can be used to return to the List of Topics, to the area previous to the jump.
- Beneath each section of the use guide are links to jump to the eBooks welcome page, the eBooks overview, the netLibrary use guide's introduction and list of topics, and the OverDrive use guide.
- The Back button can be used to return to the area in the use guide previous to the jump.
- Links to the netLibrary homepage are provided throughout these pages.
- The links will open the homepage in a separate window, which will enable viewing and use of these pages while navigating the netLibrary Web site.
Following are the subjects that are covered in the netLibrary use guide. As mentioned, each topic and subtopic is also a link that can be clicked onto, to jump directly to that area of the guide.
1. How to Access netLibrary
How the Homepage Displays
How to Access netLibrary
Whether a customer uses a public computer at a Broward County Library location or accesses the library's Web site, www.broward.org/library, from an external location, the quickest entry to netLibrary is via "eBooks," which is located in the left navigation panel of the library's Web site.
- Click onto "Find Materials" in the left navigation panel.
- Click onto "eBooks" from the drop-down menu that will display.
- "Welcome to Broward County Library's eBooks," the pages you are now reading, will display on-screen. Links are provided throughout these pages to go directly to the netLibrary homepage.
- Click onto any netLibrary link provided on these pages to go to the netLibrary Web site.
- The netLibrary homepage will open in a separate window -- to enable viewing and use of these pages along with the netLibrary Web site.
There are other entry points to the netLibrary section; those entry points are direct links without the addition of these pages.
- For example, there is a netLibrary link in the library's Online Resources. The"Online Resources" link appears as a tab on the top of every Visual Catalog page as well as in the left navigation panel on most library Web pages.
- To access, click "Online Resources," then "EBooks & Audio Books," then "netLibrary."
What Is Needed for Access to netLibrary
- The public computers at the library locations have an open link to netLibrary, and customers will not be asked to enter any information to enter or use the site.
- When accessing the site from an external location, a customer will be asked to enter Broward County Library card information at the point of entry.
How the netLibrary Homepage Displays
When customers enter the netLibrary site, its homepage will display with two distinct areas:
- Search functions in the main area of the screen
- eBook groupings in the right navigation box titled "In Our Collection"
Those two areas of the homepage are used to select eBooks for browsing and check-out, which is explained further in this guide.
At the bottom of the homepage, there is also an option available to change the interface language. Except for the eBooks' contents, the language used on the netLibrary Web Site can be temporarily changed from the default interface of English by clicking onto one of the language choices: Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, or Thai. The change in interface language will remain in place until the computer is powered off. (Customers with netLibrary accounts can save the change to be the new default for logged-in use; see Section 13.)

2. How to Browse the netLibrary Collection and Check Out eBooks
The steps to check out an eBook are basically the same steps that are taken when visiting a physical library location: Browse, select, and check out.
In order to follow that pattern online, a title or a selection of eBooks needs to be displayed on-screen with sufficient content information that a customer can browse in order to make selections for check-out.
Numerous actions can be performed on the netLibrary homepage that will result in lists of eBook titles being displayed on-screen. Each title on the list will display with details, including excerpts from the eBook, which will give customers a good idea of the eBook's contents.
The following areas of the netLibrary homepage are used to bring browse lists on-screen:
- Search Box
Entering a term in the search box, which appears in the main area of the homepage, will display a list of eBooks that match the search query.- When the search results display, there will also be a "Related Topics" box in the right panel that contains suggestions for additional searches. If utilized, that search will also result in a displayed list of eBooks.
- In Our Collection
"In Our Collection" is the green-shaded box that appears to the right of the search area. Clicking onto any of its top three links, the blue text lines, will display a list of eBooks.- When the list displays, the screen will also have a search box that can be used to obtain additional lists of eBooks.
- Reference Center's Main Area: Search
Clicking onto the "Reference Center," which is the last link in the "In Our Collection" box, will display a page with a search area on the left, in the main portion of the screen. Conducting a search in that area will display a list of eBooks.- The list that is brought on-screen will also contain the "Related Topics" box in the right panel to expand the search, if desired.
- Reference Center's Right Panel: "Reference Center Browse"
When clicking onto "Reference Center," which is the last link in the "In Our Collection" box, the page will display a "Reference Center Browse" in the right panel that consists of a list of topics, each prefaced with a plus sign.- Clicking onto a plus sign will open the category to show the eBook titles that are available in that category.
- Clicking onto a title will bring the eBook on-screen.
- Reference Center Browse is a direct check-out area. There will be no "Click to view" option. Instead, for those eBooks, clicking onto a title in a category will check the eBook out and, if available, it will appear immediately on-screen.
- eBook of the Month
An additional item for check-out is listed on the homepage, as well as the other pages: It is the "eBook of the Month," which will be pictured in the right panel of the screen. Clicking onto the picture of the eBook will bring its expanded description on-screen accompanied with the "View this eBook" option.
Options Available While Browsing
The lists of eBooks that appear on-screen, prompted by any of the actions mentioned in the above paragraphs, will display with three click-on options beneath each title. Of these three options, the "Show Details" option will be the one most actively used by customers while browsing.
- "View this eBook" -- Clicking onto this option will check-out the eBook.
- See next section.
- "Show Details" -- Clicking onto this option will display basic information about the eBook, excerpts from the eBook, as well as various links:
- The author's name that appears beneath a title is also a link to view other eBooks in the collection by that author, if available.
- The "View this eBook" and the "Add to Favorites" options will display on this page, as they do on other pages. These options are explained further in the guide.
- An e-mail option is provided should customers want to send a copy of the eBook's details to themselves or to others.
- It includes the option to craft a note to the recipient.
- Beneath the eBook's publication information will be a title bar, "Subject." If available, subjects related to the eBook's contents or authors writing about similar topics will be listed, with each item also serving as a link to display those related titles.
- Each excerpt that is provided will include a link to the full page of the eBook from which it was extracted.
- If a list of eBooks resulted from a search query, each occurrence of the search term will be highlighted in the excerpt.
- As various links and options are clicked onto via "Show Details," the browser's Back button can be used to return to prior screens.
- "Add to Favorites"
- This option is explained further in this guide, in the section titled "Favorites."
Check-out
Check-out is accomplished by clicking onto "View this eBook." It is a one-step process -- one click of the mouse onto "View this eBook" will check out the item for the customer. If it is available for check-out, the full-content eBook will immediately come on-screen, and the customer can read/view the eBook or keep it in checked-out status while returning to the collection to make another selection (See "Checking Out Multiple netLibrary eBooks.")
- When a customer clicks onto the "View this eBook" option, the customer checks out the eBook.
- The eBook will display immediately on-screen, if it is available.
- If the customer uses the eBook actively, the customer will have full access to the checked-out eBook for the entire session -- typically, up to four hours.
- If the eBook is not available:
- A message will display that the eBook is currently checked out.
- An option will be offered to receive an e-mail notification when the title becomes available.
- Customers will still have the option to view the details/description of the eBook as well as its full table of contents.
- The eBook will display immediately on-screen, if it is available.
Check-out Limits:
- At the library: Check-out is dependent on the availability of public computers and is limited to the open hours of the library.
- External locations: No time-of-day limits; eBooks can be checked out any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- No limit to the number of check-out sessions.
- The duration of each check-out session is limited -- typically, an eBook is limited to four hours of use during one session.
- When the time limit has been reached, the eBook is automatically removed from the screen and replaced with a message informing that check-out time has expired.
- At session end, the customer may start another check-out session immediately, and may borrow the same eBook that has just timed out if it has not been loaned elsewhere.
- Active viewing is necessary. An eBook needs to be used at least every 15 minutes during a session to keep it in checked-out status. If no activity (navigating through the pages, searching, scrolling, etc.) is noted, the eBook will be automatically returned to the netLibrary collection.
- The maximum number of netLibrary eBooks that can be checked out in one loan session is four.

3. How to Read/View netLibrary eBooks
On-screen, a netLibrary eBook displays in basically the same fashion as a hard-copy version -- the book jacket appears on-screen; if the book has a table of contents, it will display for the eBook as well; and the content pages will display as presented in the hard-copy version. To navigate through the eBook, online tools are used to move from page to page or to jump to particular sections.
Navigating the eBook
When a customer clicks onto "View this eBook," if it is available for check-out, it will immediately display in the major portion of the screen. The eBook will be accompanied on-screen with page elements that remain in place throughout all its pages. Included in those elements are two page navigators that will be most often used when reading/viewing the eBook:
- The green bar contains page navigators.
- In most cases, there will be a green bar above the text of the eBook that contains the online page turners of "Next," "Previous," "Page Number"/"Go."
- To move to a page in the eBook, click onto "Next", or "Previous", or enter a page number and click "Go."
- The table of contents is a page navigator.
- If the item has a table of contents, it will display in the netLibrary tool palette to the left of the eBook on-screen.
- Nonfiction materials have a table of contents in almost all cases. Fiction materials usually do not contain a table of contents.
- Generally, when an eBook is checked out, it will open with its table of contents fully displayed in the tool palette area; if not, click the "Contents" tab in the tool palette to display the table of contents.
- To jump to the first page of a chapter or section in the eBook, click onto a chapter or section title in the eBook's table of contents.
- Then continue the navigation by using the page turners or, if another jump to a particular section is preferred, use the table of contents to go to another chapter or section.
- If the item has a table of contents, it will display in the netLibrary tool palette to the left of the eBook on-screen.
- Note: Some eBooks will display in a file format that includes its own toolbar, which may offer more navigation options than those offered by the web browser. However, in all of the file formats in which eBooks display, the web browser's menu bar will always be displayed and its options available for use.
Adjusting Text Size and Screen Display for the eBook
Adjustments can be made to how the eBook displays on-screen:
- To adjust text size, click onto the web browser's "View," located on the top menu bar.
- Choose "Text Size" from the drop-down menu, and make a selection.
- To change the width area where the eBook text is displayed on-screen (perhaps to expand the text area), move the mouse onto the vertical line that appears between the netLibrary tool palette and the text of the eBook.
- When a two-sided horizontal arrow appears, left-click the mouse and drag the vertical line to the left or right till the text is displayed within the width desired.
- Note: Some eBooks will display in a file format that includes its own toolbar, which may offer more adjustments and options than those offered by the web browser. However, in all of the file formats in which eBooks display, the web browser's menu bar will always be displayed and its options available for use.
Using eBook Tools While Reading/Viewing
Knowledge tools, search tools, reference tools, and research tools are available for use while reading/viewing eBooks. The information the tools provide, responding to a customer's query, will display in the tool palette in the left navigation panel, which allows the customer to view the information alongside the eBook.
What the Tools Do:
- In addition to providing a definition, the "Dictionary" tool will usually include a pronunciation icon that the reader can click onto to hear how a word is pronounced.
- A thesaurus option is available in the drop-down menu of the "Dictionary" tool.
- A translation option is available in the drop-down menu of the "Dictionary" tool.
- Use of the "Search this eContent" tool will display the results in the tool palette area, showing each appearance of the queried word or term in the eBook.
- When the search results appear in the tool palette area, the word or term will display within an excerpt of its sentence to give the reader an idea of how it is being used in the eBook.
- Each result will also include a link that the reader can click onto to jump to the page in the eBook from which the excerpt was extracted.
- This search tool is not only handy to scan one eBook to find each instance of use of a particular word or phrase, but also serves well to quickly check out the content of numerous eBooks to search how specific topics are addressed.
- When the search results appear in the tool palette area, the word or term will display within an excerpt of its sentence to give the reader an idea of how it is being used in the eBook.
- The "Add Note" and "Add to Favorites" tools that are offered in the menu of query options are only available for customers that have a netLibrary account. This is an optional account, provided at no charge, that a customer uses to create a personal virtual bookshelf of eBook titles and notes for future reference and to enable other personalized options. Information about the netLibrary account is provided further in this guide.
How To Access Tools:
- Highlight a word or phrase within the eBook by left-clicking the mouse and dragging the mouse across the text that will be used for the query.
- Right-click the mouse and select from the menu of query options.
- The results the tool provides will display on the left, in the tool palette.
- Note: If the right-mouse-click option is not functional with a particular eBook, or if it does not offer a full selection of tools, use the tool palette instead:
- Example: Click onto a tool palette tab (for example, "Dictionary"), type a term into the "Look up" box, then click "Go."
- Or, instead of typing, copy text from the eBook and paste into that box.
- Example: Type a term into the "Search this eContent" box, then click "search."
- Or copy text from the eBook and paste into that box.
- Using the tool palette will provide the same results as using the mouse action.
- Example: Click onto a tool palette tab (for example, "Dictionary"), type a term into the "Look up" box, then click "Go."
Note: For customers who have a netLibrary account, there is information provided further in this guide regarding the use of Knowledge Tools to paste information into netLibrary notes.

4. Closing (Returning) netLibrary eBooks
There is no need to take any action to return an eBook to the collection. netLibrary eBooks are returned automatically, electronically.
- If a customer does not actively view (turn pages, search within the text, etc.) in 15-minute increments, the checked-out eBook is automatically returned to the collection. No action is required by the customer.
- If the customer exits the netLibrary Web site, the customer's checked-out eBooks are automatically returned to the collection. No action is required by the customer.
There are situations when a customer may want to return an eBook immediately. For example, perhaps the customer wants to check out additional eBooks but already has the maximum four eBooks in checked-out status during a session; the customer can then manually return (close) an item.
To Manually Return an eBook Instead of Using Automatic Return
- When the eBook is open on-screen, there are a few ways that the item can be returned to the collection:
- One method: Right-click the mouse and choose "Close eContent."
- Another method: Click onto "(Close Item)" which appears next to the title in the left navigation panel above the tabs in the tool palette.
- Another method: Go to the left panel. Above the tool palette will be displayed in bold the title of the eBook that is currently open on-screen. To close that eBook, simply click onto "Close Item," which is located next to the title.
- Any of the above methods can be used, whichever way is preferred by the customer.
- When the checked-out eBook is not currently on screen, the item can be returned in several ways:
- One method:
- Go to the tool palette in the left panel of the screen.
- Above the tabs of the tool palette, click onto the drop-down arrow that appears next to the "Select an open item..." box to display the titles of the checked-out eBooks.
- Click onto the title that is to be returned, then click "Go."
- The eBook will display on-screen and its title will appear in bold text next to the "(Close Item)" option in the area above the tool palette.
- Click "(Close Item)."
- Another method:
- Click onto "Home."
- Go to the "Currently Viewing" box in the right panel and click onto the eBook title to bring it on-screen.
- In the left panel of the screen, above the tabs of the tool palette, click onto "(Close Item)" which appears next to the title.

5. Different Formats of netLibrary eBooks
The netLibrary eBooks are displayed in three different file formats: HTML, PDF, or DjVu.There is no choice to make, as the file format is set by the publisher and cannot be changed by the customer. An obvious difference on-screen among the three formats will be the presence or no presence of an additional toolbar.
- An eBook in HTML format will not display an additional toolbar on-screen. The eBook will display as described above in the" Reading/Viewing netLibrary eBooks" section.
- Most of the nonfiction eBooks will display in HTML format.
- An eBook in PDF format will display with an Adobe toolbar above the text. A customer can use the Adobe toolbar or the web browser's toolbar, or both. The Adobe toolbar provides more options than the web browser's toolbar, especially for adjustments of text display.
- Most of the fiction eBooks are displayed in PDF format, and the Adobe toolbar is very useful in customizing the screen view to what may be a longer, continuous reading session.
- If a customer's computer is not equipped with the software to view a PDF format, a prompt will display to download the software at that time.
- The download process is quickly accomplished with a few mouse clicks, and step-by-step instructions are provided on-screen. There is no charge for the download.
- An eBook in DjVu (pronounced "déjà vu") format will also display with its own toolbar that can be used with or without the web browser's toolbar.
- DjVu is a digital document format with advanced compression technology that allows very high resolution images of documents and photographs.
- A DjVu plug-in is required to view these eBooks; a prompt will display if the plug-in needs to be downloaded, in which case there will be no charge for the download, and the steps for the download process will be provided on-screen.
To find out which file format an eBook will display in before checking out the eBook, click onto the "Show Details" option beneath an eBook title. The viewing requirements will be listed below the picture of the eBook jacket.
- If there is a blank space underneath the picture with no viewing requirements listed, the eBook will display in HTML format.
- A title in PDF format will show the Adobe requirements.
- A title in DjVu e-format will show DjVu plug-in requirements.

6. Switching Actions in netLibrary -- Reading to Browsing, Etc.
Switching actions -- reading/viewing a netLibrary eBook, then perhaps returning to the search results to browse or check out additional items, or conducting a new search, and then going back to reading/viewing, etc. -- can be done in any pattern and as often as desired. Probably the only step that has to stay firmly in place is that customers need to return to reading/viewing each eBook periodically -- in approximately 15-minute intervals -- in order to keep an eBook in checked-out status.
How to Switch Back and Forth Among Actions
Typically, the four areas listed below are used for navigating back and forth among actions. Also listed below are examples of how a customer might use those areas to switch actions during a session. Only examples are given, as customers will develop their own styles for these navigations.
Areas Typically Used to Switch Actions:
- "Home"
- "Home"always displays on the top left of every page.
- When an eBook is open on-screen, "Home" will be to the right of the netLibrary logo, above the tool palette.
- On all other netLibrary pages, "Home" will be above the netLibrary logo, in the green-shaded area that also contains the "Log In."
- "Home"always displays on the top left of every page.
- "Currently Viewing"
- This peach-shaded box displays in the right panel of both the homepage as well as the search results' pages, and contains a list of the checked-out eBook titles.
- "Back to Search"
- When an eBook is open on-screen, this click-on option displays on the top left of the screen, beneath "Home," by the netLibrary logo.
- "Recent Searches"
- On the homepage, this pink-shaded text line displays in the "Basic Search" area, with recent searches listed beneath it.
- On a search-results page, this pink-shaded box will display in the right panel within the "Basic Search" box, and will have recent searches listed beneath it.
Examples of Switching Actions: Reading/Returning to Search Results
- If a customer is reading/viewing an eBook, which is open on-screen, and wants to take another look at the eBooks that displayed from the most-recent search conducted during the session, the customer could:
- Click onto "Back to Search."
- The eBook will go off-screen but it will remain in checked-out status.
- The prior search results will display on screen.
- The customer can then browse through the results list; view details, if desired; check out additional eBooks from the results list, if desired.
- When ready to return to the title first checked-out, or to any other checked-out title, the customer would click onto the title in the "Currently Viewing" box.
- Click onto "Back to Search."
- To display the results lists from prior searches conducted during that session, the customer would
- Click onto "Recent Searches."
- OR, another method:
- Click onto "Home."
- Then click onto "Recent Searches."
- Browse or perform any action via those results.
- Either way, when ready to return to the title first checked-out, or to any other checked-out title, the customer would click onto the title in the "Currently Viewing" box.
Example of Switching Actions: Reading/Conducting a New Search
- If a customer is reading/viewing an eBook, which is open on-screen, and wants to conduct a new search, the customer could:
- Click onto "Home."
- The eBook will go off-screen but remains in checked-out status.
- The homepage will display with the search area in the main area.
- The customer would enter a new query word or term.
- When the new search results display, the customer could make use of any of the options.
- When ready to return to the title first checked-out, or to any other checked-out title, the customer would click onto the title in the "Currently Viewing" box.
- Click onto "Home."

7. Checking out Multiple netLibrary eBooks During One Session
Customers can keep up to four eBooks in checked-out status during one session. If a customer wants to keep multiple eBooks open during one session, the eBooks would need to be checked out one at a time, and the customer would read/view the eBooks on-screen one at a time, switching back and forth among the checked-out eBooks to display one of them on-screen when needed. (See the next section, "Navigating Multiple netLibrary eBooks.")
To check out multiple copies:
- Check out the first eBook in the usual manner.
- Return to the collection to check out another eBook by performing any of the following actions:
- Click onto "Back to Search" to continue browsing, and check out an additional item.
- Or, click onto "Home," then click onto a link in the list of "Recent Searches" to browse through prior search results, and check out an additional item.
- Or, click onto "Home" to conduct a new search to browse results, and check out an additional item.
- Or, click onto "Home" to browse eBooks via the "In Our Collection" box, and check out an additional item.
- The above actions can be repeated twice more if additional eBooks need to be checked out.
If customers want to read/view more than four eBooks during one session, they would have to rotate eBooks in and out of checked-out status in order to keep to the limit of four:
- Any number of eBooks can be manually returned to the collection and others checked out in replacement, in a rotation process that would keep only four eBooks checked out at one time during a session.
- Any number of eBooks can be allowed to time out and be returned automatically to the collection while others would be actively read and kept in checked-out status, in a rotating cycle that would keep only four eBooks checked out at one time during the session.

8. Navigating Multiple Copies of Checked-out netLibrary eBooks
There are basically three areas that are used to switch the screen view from one checked-out eBook to another:
- "Home"
Because "Home" displays on the top left of every netLibrary page, it can be used to switch from one checked-out eBook to another in all situations.- Clicking onto "Home" will display the netLibrary homepage.
- In the right panel of the homepage will be the peach-shaded "Currently Viewing" box that displays the list of checked-out eBooks.
- Clicking onto a title in the list will bring that eBook on-screen.
- "Currently Viewing" Box
- This peach-shaded box displays in the right panel of both the homepage as well as the search results' pages, and contains a list of the checked-out eBook titles. It does not display on the pages that display the contents of the eBook.
- As mentioned in the above paragraph, clicking onto an eBook title listed in the "Currently Viewing" box will bring that eBook on-screen.
- Left Panel Area, Above Tool Palette
- The left panel with the tool palette displays on every page of an on-screen eBook.
- The area right above the tabs of the tool palette will display the on-screen eBook title in bold. Beneath that will be a "Select an open item..." box with a drop-down arrow that can be clicked onto to display the checked-out titles.
- Clicking onto a title in the drop-down list and then clicking "Go" will bring that eBook on-screen.
Any of the above methods can be used to open one of the checked-out eBooks, to display it on-screen. Since only one checked-out eBook can be open on-screen at a time, when another of the checked-out eBooks needs to be read/viewed, a customer will need to switch from the eBook on-screen to another by using any of the above methods. A customer can keep switching among the checked-out eBooks as often as needed during a session, keeping in mind that each eBook needs to be actively read in approximately 15-minute intervals to keep it in checked-out status.

9. Copying and Printing Text from netLibrary eBooks
Customers can copy and paste selections of text from a netLibrary eBook to save elsewhere or to print. Customers can also print a certain number of eBook pages. However, excessive printing or copying of an eBook is not allowed and violates copyright laws. If a suspicious pattern is noted of excessive printing or copying, the activity is electronically logged and the customer is sent a copyright warning message.
How to copy text:
- Highlight a selection of the eBook's text, by left-clicking and dragging the mouse over the text to be copied.
- Click onto "Edit" in the web browser's top menu bar, and choose "Copy."
- Note: Using the keyboard's Ctrl and C keys to copy the text in eBooks can also be used. However, it does not work consistently with some systems.
- Go to the screen onto which you want to copy the text, right-click the mouse, and click "Paste" (or depress the keyboard's Ctrl and V keys to paste the text).
- Note: Using the keyboard's Ctrl and V keys to paste text does not seem to present any problems.
Note: In almost all cases, highlighting an entire eBook page will not work; only portions of a page will stay highlighted. This is a result of the copyright laws.
Note: In almost all cases, using the web browser's "Edit" and "Select All" will not be functional, again a result of the copyright laws.
Note: Customers who have netLibrary accounts can copy highlighted text and paste into notes that are filed with the eBook titles in their personal virtual bookshelves for future reference. Since notes can be accessed 24/7 but eBooks may not always be available, this option can be useful for some customers. This option is explained in detail in Notes, further in this guide.
How to print text:
- One way to print part of an eBook is to click onto the "Print" option that appears in the green bar that contains the online page turners, the green bar that appears on the screen right above the eBook text.
- When "Print" is clicked onto, a print box will display that provides the available options.
- By default, the circle is marked to print "Current Page." To print, click onto "Ok."
- For some eBooks, the "Ok" is not in bold print, which indicates printing is not an option, usually based on copyright laws. In that case, there will be an explanatory phrase in the box, such as "0 more pages may be printed from the current title this hour."
- Click onto the second circle if multiple pages need to be printed.
- If needed, edit the number of pages to be printed by typing over the default number in the box. Then click onto "Ok."
- The number of pages that can be printed from the eBook will usually be noted beneath the second circle.
- If needed, edit the number of pages to be printed by typing over the default number in the box. Then click onto "Ok."
- Another way to print an eBook page is to use the web browser's print tool. However, this method will only print one eBook page at a time. And, printing a selection of highlighted text will only work occasionally. To use the browser's print tool:
- Click onto the browser's print icon.
- Or click onto "File" in the browser's top menu bar and choose "Print."
- Or depress the keyboard's Ctrl and P keys.
- A print menu box will display from any of the above actions.
- Regardless of the options that are offered in the "Page Range" of the print menu box, there are only two print actions that can occur: (1) a highlighted section of text in the eBook on-screen can sometimes be printed, or (2) one page, the contents of the eBook currently on-screen can be printed.
- If "All" is clicked onto in the print menu box or if an entry is made to print certain pages, those directions will be ignored.
- Whatever option a customer stipulates in the "Page Range," in most cases, the only result that will occur is the printing of one page, the current page. This is also a result of copyright laws.
- When a portion of text is highlighted in the eBook and the browser's Print tool is used, if the circle next to "Selection" is enabled for use, that text can also be printed. In most cases, however, the "Selection" option will not be functional.
- Regardless of the options that are offered in the "Page Range" of the print menu box, there are only two print actions that can occur: (1) a highlighted section of text in the eBook on-screen can sometimes be printed, or (2) one page, the contents of the eBook currently on-screen can be printed.
Note: Depending on the file format (HTML, PDF, or DjVu) of the eBook, there may be an additional toolbar for copying and printing. However, in any and all of the display formats, the web browser's menu bar and the key strokes mentioned above will be functional for the tasks of copying and printing.

10. Establishing and Using a netLibrary Account (Optional)
Establishing a netLibrary account is optional. A netLibrary account is not necessary to browse, select, or check out netLibrary eBooks. However, many customers find the extra options that the account provides, at no charge, extremely useful for their needs -- especially the options of Favorites and Notes. (Information about these two major features is included in Sections 11 and 12.)
To establish a netLibrary account:
- Click onto "Create a Free Account," which is located on the top right of the netLibrary homepage.
- Enter the information in the required fields and click "Create Account."
- The netLibrary account is then established.
netLibrary Account Log-in
Account log-in can be done at any time while navigating the netLibrary site, or not at all.
- A customer can log in immediately when accessing the netLibrary site by:
- Clicking onto "Log In" at the very top of the screen, next to "Home" and entering the user name and password.
- The customer can then continue to navigate the site in the usual manner, and if any account options are clicked onto during that session, they will be available for use.
- Clicking onto "Log In" at the very top of the screen, next to "Home" and entering the user name and password.
- A customer can log in when prompted.
- A prompt will display if a customer, while navigating the site, clicks onto an option that is reserved for netLibrary account holders.
- Only one log-in is needed; when the customer logs in at a prompt, all account options will be enabled for that session.
- A customer can navigate the netLibrary site without using any netLibrary account options, making the log-in unnecessary.

11. Favorites (A netLibrary account is needed to use this option.)
Customers with a netLibrary account have the option to tag an eBook as a favorite -- which means the eBook's title, its description, various click-on options, including "View this eBook," and any notes crafted or pasted by the customer on its pages will be filed in the customer's account for future reference, which the customer can access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
By tagging eBooks as favorites, customers create personal virtual bookshelves that are stocked with Broward County Library eBook titles specific to their interests. Customers can then skip the search and browse steps on the netLibrary site, if they prefer, and go directly to their net Library accounts to select for check-out from the titles they filed in their personal virtual bookshelves.
Some customers save as favorites the eBook titles of cookbooks, repair books, craft books, or reference materials that contain particular or detailed information they think may be helpful at some future point. Some customers stock their virtual bookshelves with titles of eBooks they want to periodically reread or which they prefer to read in sections spanned over time. Most customers include a selection of eBook titles that they have gathered for a potentially good future read -- virtual shelves and shelves of titles, eBooks they discovered while browsing the collection but for which they had no time to explore or read immediately.
How to Tag eBooks as Favorites
Tagging an eBook as a favorite can be done in various areas of the netLibrary site, by clicking onto the "Add to Favorites" option.
- When search results are displayed, the "Add to Favorites" option will display beneath each title's description.
- When the "Show Details" option is clicked onto, the page that is brought on-screen will have the "Add to Favorites" option displayed in the top section, next to the eBook jacket and beneath "View this eBook."
- When reading an eBook on-screen that is in HTML format, the mouse can be right-clicked in the text area to open a menu box that will include the "Add to Favorites" option.
- When reading eBooks in file formats other than HTML, the customer will usually have to switch to another screen, such as a previous search that has that title in the results list, in order to make use of the "Add to Favorites" option.
- When a customer clicks onto "Notes" to create and save notes for an eBook title while reading/viewing the eBook, if the eBook has not already been saved as a favorite, it will automatically be saved in the customer's favorites when the note is saved.
Note: The Favorites button that is located on the top of the screen on the web browser toolbar should not be mistaken for the favorites option in netLibrary. That button has no connection to the netLibrary's "Add to Favorites" option and will not save items to a customer's netLibrary account.
How to Access eBooks That Were Tagged as Favorites:
- Log in to the netLibrary account.
- Click onto "Favorites and Notes," which is located on the top right of every netLibrary Web page except for the pages that display eBook contents.
- If an eBook is open on-screen, click onto "Home" to use the "Favorites and Notes" option on the top right of that page.
- The favorite eBook titles will display in a list format with their descriptions, various options that include "View this eBook," and notes.
The eBook titles that have been tagged as favorites and their accompanying information and notes are stored in customers' personal virtual bookshelves until the titles are deleted by the customers.

12. Notes (A netLibrary account is needed to use this option.)
Customers with a netLibrary account have the option to craft electronic notes -- up to 500 characters per note per eBook page. The notes and the full eBook pages for which the notes were created are then filed with the customers' favorite eBook titles for future reference in their virtual bookshelves.
Use of the notes option is often compared to putting a post-it note atop a page in a hard-copy book -- a note that marks a page in a book and contains information that is important for future reference. The electronic notes, however, have certain advantages over hard-copy notes.
- An electronic note will not accidentally fall out of the eBook over time; it stays connected to a customer's account till deleted.
- The electronic note name and note contents can be revised or added to at any time, which makes it easier to keep the notes legible and clear for future reference.
- All of the notes crafted for an eBook display in one list that is saved under the title in the customer's account. This allows customers to read all of the notes for a title at one time.
- The notes can be displayed for view in a condensed version or in full text.
- All of the eBook titles saved as favorites also display in one list, with or without their notes.
- This presents an opportunity for the customers to use the browser's Find tool ((Ctrl + F keys) to scan the full list of favorites to pinpoint an eBook or a note by entering a query term in the Find box.
- This is especially handy when customers recall highlighting something in one of their favorites but are not sure exactly which favorite.
- This presents an opportunity for the customers to use the browser's Find tool ((Ctrl + F keys) to scan the full list of favorites to pinpoint an eBook or a note by entering a query term in the Find box.
- . The notes, when displayed, are accompanied with electronic options:
- Such as the option to link from each note to the full eBook page to which it refers.
- The full eBook page that was open on screen when a note is crafted is saved along with the note in the customer's netLibrary account, which means the full eBook page can be viewed at any time when the notes are pulled up; the eBook does not have to be checked out.
- Such as the option to link from each note to the full eBook page to which it refers.
- Since notes and their corresponding eBook pages are saved to a customer's account, not in the actual eBooks, customers have 24/7access to that information even when the full-content eBooks are not available.
- Since the library's Web site, www.broward.org/library, can be accessed anytime, anywhere, even if they are out of the country, customers can access their saved information from any computer that is connected to the Internet.
Using the Notepad
When "Notes" is accessed, a notepad will display in the left tool palette. The notes area will include a note field, a large blank box, that is used for crafting initial notes for eBook pages as well as for revising previously crafted notes.
- When notes are revised, they are "dropped" into the note field via the Edit Note option; the text can then be revised as needed, and the note resaved. There is more information on previously crafted notes in the "Saving, Revising, Deleting Notes" section further in this guide.
- Crafting an initial note for an eBook page needs to be done while the eBook is checked out and displayed on-screen. This is necessary because, when the note is saved, the system is set up to attach the note to the eBook page that is open on-screen and store both with the eBook title in the customer's virtual bookshelf. Once an initial note is saved, the note and the eBook page can be accessed and viewed, as well as the note edited, at any time; the eBook will not need to be checked out unless the customer wants to view the eBook's full contents.
The first step to craft a note for an eBook page that does not have a previously crafted note is to activate the "Notes" area, to make the notepad available for use.
- As mentioned, for an initial note, the eBook needs to be on screen.
- The eBook should be open to the eBook page the customer wants assigned to the note.
- Either click onto the green "Notes" tab in the netLibrary's tool palette, which is located in the left panel of the screen.
- Or, right-click the mouse, and select "Add Note."
- For either of the above actions, if not logged into the netLibrary account, a log-in menu will display for that purpose.
- Once logged in, the "Notes" tab will need to be clicked onto again.
- The notes area will display within the tool palette in the left panel of the screen, and the eBook will remain open in the main area of the screen.
When the notes panel displays in the netLibrary tool palette, it will contain:
- A field for entry of a note name
- A field for entry of note contents, up to 500 characters
- A click-on option of "Add Note"
- The bottom portion of the panel will contain all the notes, in list format, that have already been crafted for the eBook
- The first text line in that bottom area will indicate the number of notes that have been crafted for the eBook.
- The list that follows will contain all of the notes that the customer crafted for the eBook.
- The notes will appear in random order; however, the eBook page number for which the note was crafted will display and can be used as a guide.
- Displayed beneath each note will be the three options of "Edit," "Go to Page," and "Remove."
Once the "Notes" area has been activated, the next step is to place text into the note field (the large blank box) and, if desired, to enter a name into the name field.
- Text can be typed or pasted into the note field.
- A name can be typed in the name field, if desired.
The order in which this is done is up to the customer. Customers need not be overly concerned about how they enter their initial information, as revisions or additions to the note name and the note contents can be done at any time during the session or any time in the future, to form the notes into a handy tool that meets specific needs.
Note Name
When the notepad displays, the screen indicates that text entry is required for the "Name" field. This is actually not the case. Crafting a name for the note is optional. However, though it is not required, some customers may find that crafting a name for each note is very useful for their purposes.
There is an automatic insertion made to the "Name" field: the page of the eBook that is open on-screen when a note is crafted.
- The eBook page number, the eBook page that is open on-screen, is automatically inserted in the name field when a note is crafted -- to electronically link that eBook page to the customer's note. This allows the "Go to Page" option to be functional when the note is later accessed.
Any text a customer crafts for the note name is saved alongside the automatic entry of the eBook page number. If a customer does not craft a note name, only the automatic entry appears in the name field.
- As an example: If a customer has page 5 of an eBook open on-screen, makes no entry in the note's "Name" field, types or pastes text into the note field, and then saves the note, when the note is later accessed, it will display with the following:
- Note 1 (pg 5)
and underneath will be the text of the note that was crafted for that page.
- Note 1 (pg 5)
- Another example: If a customer has page 5 of an eBook open on-screen, types "Garage Door Maintenance" into the name field, types or pastes text into the note field, and then saves the note, when the note is later accessed later, it will display with the following:
- Note 3. Garage Door Maintenance (pg 5)
and underneath will be the text of the note that was crafted for that page
- Note 3. Garage Door Maintenance (pg 5)
The note number -- Note 1, Note 2, Note 3, etc. -- that automatically displays in front of the note name is a numbering factor only.
- The note numbers that are automatically inserted keep track of how many notes have been crafted for an eBook and allow for a view-friendly arrangement in the list, separating one note from the other in the list of notes that display beneath an favorite eBook title.
- There is no pattern to how the note numbers are assigned; they are random.
- The system does not affix them in front of note names in the chronological or numerical order in which the notes were crafted.
- A customer may type a fifth note for an eBook, and when the note is displayed later, it may show up as Note 2 and a previous note typed a week ago for the eBook may be listed as Note 5.
- A note number may change.
- A note prefaced with Note 3 may be prefaced with Note 1 the next time the note is accessed.
- The system does not affix them in front of note names in the chronological or numerical order in which the notes were crafted.
- As a numbering factor, the note numbers are accurate as they match to the total number of notes crafted for an eBook
- As a list separator, the note numbers are useful for customers to jump from note to note in the list.
- The note numbers are not meant to be used as a reference tool to locate specific notes.
Note: When notes are saved, they are saved with the eBook's title, author's name, and publication information; therefore, there is no need to include that information in a note's name.
Note Limitations, Note Contents
The "Notes" option is easy to use and extremely handy for future reference. There are basically only two important things to keep in mind when crafting notes:
- A note is limited to 500 characters per eBook page.
- This is not a huge liability. If customers do not want to condense their notes, they can always span their notations, starting their notation on one note on one eBook page and continuing their notation on another note on the next eBook page, etc.
- A prompt is given when a note has exceeded capacity. However, the prompt of "The Max Length for this field is 500 characters" only appears when a customer attempts to save the note, at which point the customer would have to go back and condense the note before it could be saved.
- Customers who prefer to craft notes in one draft may want to keep the note's length in mind while they are creating it.
- With continued use of notes, customers will soon be able to gauge by sight when the notes field is getting close to exceeding the maximum of 500 characters.
- The system saves only one note for each eBook page.
- This is extremely important to keep in mind because if a second note is crafted onto a page that already has a note, the second note will overwrite the previous note, and there will be no prompt given that this overwrite will occur.
- A customer may get the impression that multiple notes can be crafted for each eBook page when a blank notepad is provided in the netLibrary tool palette as a result of clicking onto the "Notes" tab. And if the customer continues and crafts a second note and then clicks "Add Note," the customer may continue to have the impression that the second note will also be saved with the eBook page. That second note will be saved, but at the expense of the first note that it will override.
- The Notes tool is set up as a system that attaches one note -- and only one note -- to an eBook page.
- After clicking onto the "Notes" tab, before creating the note, it is wise to check the list of previous notes for the eBook.
- This is easily done by scanning the list that displays in the bottom portion of the notes area. Since the first line of each saved note includes the eBook page number in parentheses, it is easy to scan the list to see if a note already exists for an eBook page.
- If a note was already crafted for the page, it can be brought into the notepad for additions or revisions by clicking onto its "Edit Note" option and then saved again.
- This is easily done by scanning the list that displays in the bottom portion of the notes area. Since the first line of each saved note includes the eBook page number in parentheses, it is easy to scan the list to see if a note already exists for an eBook page.
- After checking the list, if there is no previous note for the page, the cursor can be moved into the note field and a note created and saved for the page.
- This is extremely important to keep in mind because if a second note is crafted onto a page that already has a note, the second note will overwrite the previous note, and there will be no prompt given that this overwrite will occur.
Following is additional information about notes that may be useful for some customers.
- Creating notes with the intention of using the "Go to Page" option.
As mentioned above, the note name has the automatic entry of the eBook page that is on-screen when the note is crafted. Most customers will only create their notes on the specific pages of the eBook that apply to their notes, since they want to have the "Go to Page" option available for use when they access their notes in the future.- When notes are accessed, each note is displayed with three options beneath it. One of those options is "Go to Page," which links the customer directly to the full page in the eBook that was open on-screen when the note was crafted.
- The full eBook page that was on-screen when the note was crafted is attached to the note and both are saved in the customer's account, so there is no need to check out the eBook to see that particular eBook page. Access to the saved information is 24/7.
- When notes are accessed, each note is displayed with three options beneath it. One of those options is "Go to Page," which links the customer directly to the full page in the eBook that was open on-screen when the note was crafted.
- Creating notes on eBook pages without matching content.
Any type of note can be crafted for an eBook page. The note does not have to pertain to the content that appears on the eBook page that is on-screen. In that case, the "Go to Page" option that displays when the saved note is accessed later would probably not be used -- since the eBook page it would bring on-screen would not provide information about the subject that was covered in the customer's note.- For example: Some customers may prefer to craft text that they continue from one note to another note: They can start a note on page 1 of the eBook, continue the note on page 2 of the eBook, and continue doing that, eBook page by eBook page, note by note, using each note's capacity of 500 characters, to craft a long continuing notation. When these customers access their notes in the future, they would read them by jumping from note to note, using the automatically entered page numbers that appear in the note names as their guide to reading their fragmented notes in their written order. These customers' intention may be to keep their notes as their primary tool and the eBook for which the note was crafted as a supplement to their notes when needed.
- Customers drafting notes in this manner may want to mention eBook page numbers in their note contents -- at the points where they may want to refer to the eBook page. Since they have not matched their notes to eBook pages, clicking onto the "Go to Page" option will bring in the full eBook pages that were open on screen when the notes were crafted but these may not be helpful in providing a supplement to their notes. However, by including mentions of key page numbers in the eBook, a customer can then click onto the "View this eBook" option beneath their notes and navigate to the noted page when the eBook has been checked out and displays on-screen. Of course, access to those eBook pages will then be dependent upon availability of the eBook.
- For example: Some customers may prefer to craft text that they continue from one note to another note: They can start a note on page 1 of the eBook, continue the note on page 2 of the eBook, and continue doing that, eBook page by eBook page, note by note, using each note's capacity of 500 characters, to craft a long continuing notation.
Pasting Text into Notes
Text can be typed into the "Notes" area, text can be pasted into the "Notes" area, or the note can be a combination of crafted and pasted text. Regardless of the manner of inserting text, each note is limited to 500 characters.
Text can be pasted into a note from:
- Contents of an eBook that is open on-screen
- Information displayed from resources accessed via netLibrary's "Knowledge Tools"
- Information that appears on any of the netLibrary Web pages
- When navigating through the netLibrary Web pages -- whether reading another eBook, viewing details of an eBook in a browse list, researching a journal, etc. -- customers may see information that would be useful to include in a note they had crafted for one of their favorite titles. They can immediately highlight that text, access a title from their virtual bookshelf by clicking onto "Favorites and Notes," and paste and save the copied information directly into a note.
- Documents stored on a customer's computer
- Any electronic resource that allows copying
Pasting to a Note for an eBook On-screen
- In any resource, highlight the information by dragging the mouse over the text to be copied.
- Depress Ctrl and C keys to copy, or use the browser's Edit/Copy.
- For more information on copying, refer to the "Copying and Printing Text from eBooks" section.
- On the netLibrary screen, navigate to the page of the eBook that is to get the copied information pasted onto its note.
- Access the "Notes" area by clicking onto the "Notes" tab in the tool palette or by right-clicking the mouse.
- Have the note field ready for a paste.
- If the eBook page did not have a previous note crafted for it, the blank "Note" field will be used for the paste.
- If the eBook page already has a note, locate it in the list of notes and click onto its "Edit Note" option to bring the crafted note into the "Note" field for the paste.
- Position the cursor in the note field where the information is to be inserted, and paste in the text that was copied.
- Depress Ctrl and V keys to paste, or use the browser's Edit/Paste.
- Click "Save Changes."
Pasting to a Note for an eBook Not On-screen
- In any resource, highlight the information by dragging the mouse over the text to be copied.
- Depress Ctrl and C keys to copy, or use the browser's Edit/Copy.
- For more information on pasting, refer to the "Copying and Printing Text from eBooks" section.
- On the netLibrary screen, click onto "Favorites and Notes" located on the top of the page.
- If viewing another eBook on-screen, click "Home" in order to have a screen with "Favorites and Notes" on top.
- The list of favorites with their crafted notes will display.
- Scroll to the eBook favorite which has the note that will be used for the paste.
- Click onto the "Edit Note" option beneath the note and paste in the information that was copied.
- Position the cursor in the note field where the text is to be inserted.
- Depress Ctrl and V keys to paste, or use the browser's Edit/Paste.
- Click "Save Changes."
- NOTE: If the copied information is to be pasted in a note for an eBook page that does not have a previously crafted note, the eBook will need to be checked out so that it displays on-screen.
- The note would then be crafted via the "Pasting to a Note for an eBook On-screen" directions above.
Copying and Pasting Information Obtained from netLibrary's Knowledge Tools
Since the Knowledge Tools are accessed via the tool palette that accompanies each eBook on-screen, a customer needs to have an eBook checked out in order to use its resources for the purpose of copy-and-paste.
Though any eBook on-screen will supply the tool palette for use of its Knowledge Tools tab, the copy-and-paste action is simplified if the actual eBook is on-screen for which the note will be saved with the paste. The following steps would then be taken:
- Open the eBook on-screen to the page that will have the note with the paste.
- Access the "Notes" area via the "Notes" tab in the tool palette or by right-clicking the mouse.
- Have the note field ready for a paste:
- If it is a new note for an eBook page that has not yet had a note crafted for it, the blank field will be used for the paste.
- If the paste is to be added to a previously crafted note, locate the note in the list of notes, and click onto its "Edit Note" option to bring the crafted note into the "Note" field.
- Click onto the "Knowledge Tools" tab in the tool palette and access information from a resource:
- Enter or paste a query term into the "Look up" field, select a resource, and click "Search."
- The resource will open in a new window that can be used independently of the netLibrary window.
- The resource's Web page will either display results from the search and/or have other resources that the customer can click onto to access additional information.
- Pinpoint the information that is needed from the resource/s.
- In the resource window, highlight the information to be copied by dragging the mouse over the text.
- Copy the highlighted text:
- Depress Ctrl and C keys to copy, or use the browser's Edit/Copy.
- For more information on pasting, refer to the "Copying and Printing Text from eBooks" section.
- Close the resource window (or remove it from view).
- The netLibrary window will still be on-screen.
- Click onto the "Notes" tab to return to the notepad.
- Position the cursor in the note field where the text is to be inserted, and paste:
- Depress Ctrl and V keys to paste, or use the browser's Edit/Paste.
- Click "Save Changes."
Copying and Pasting Information Obtained from "Outside" Resources
Any documents that are stored on a customer's computer can be opened up while using the netLibrary site, and portions of text copied from the documents and pasted into the note field.
Text from any electronic resource that allows copying can be pasted into the note using the methods outlined in the above paragraphs. If the resource is not found in netLibrary's Knowledge Tools, the easiest way to access another Web site for the purpose of copy-and-paste is to enter its Web address in the search box of one of the netLibrary resources.
Example:
- When an eBook is on-screen, click onto the "Knowledge Tools" tab in the tool palette.
- No need to enter anything in the "Look up" field.
- Click "Search"
- The "Google" circle is filled in as a default for the search. If it is not marked for the search, click the circle in front of "Google."
- The Google Web site will open in a separate window.
- Enter the Web address into the Google search box for the outside resource from which you want to copy information for the paste.
- Example: Enter "Wikipedia.org" in the Google search box.
- Click onto the outside resource that displays in the Google search results.
- Example: Click onto the Wikipedia listing that is a direct connection to its Web site.
- The outside resource will open in a separate window.
- This method is convenient for customers whose computers do not support two open Web sites, allowing them to continue creating their notes on the netLibrary Web site while accessing resources that are not in netLibrary's Knowledge Tools.
The copy and paste actions remain the same, regardless of the resource from which information is extracted. Customers will have their own preference as to how to copy text from a resource that is not found on the netLibrary site. A determining factor may be whether the text to be copied is within one piece of information on the resource's Web site or whether the Web site needs to be explored at length and its text extracted piece by piece from various locations on the site. If information is extracted piecemeal from one or more Web sites, it may be easier to compose the note in another document and then copy and paste the final draft into a note field on the netLibrary Web site.
- After crafting a note, click "Add Note" to save the note.
- A message will display that the note has been successfully saved.
- The "Note" box will be empty, ready for use for another eBook page.
- The note that has just been crafted will be displayed in the list that appears in the bottom portion of the notes panel, with its identifying, automatically entered page number in its name field.
How to Make an Addition or Revision to a Saved Note
To add to or edit a note when the eBook is on-screen:
- When reading/viewing an eBook, if the notepad is not displayed in the tool palette in the left panel, click onto the "Notes" tab so that it is displayed.
- In the bottom portion of the notes panel, there will be a list of the previously crafted notes for the eBook.
- Each note will have three options listed beneath it: "Edit," "Go to Page," and "Remove."
- Click onto the "Edit" option that appears beneath the note for which the addition or editing will be done.
- The note will display in the notepad.
- Insert additions or edit the text as needed.
- Click "Save Changes."
- A confirming note will display: "Your changes have been saved."
To add to or edit a note when the eBook is NOT on-screen:
- Click onto "Favorites and Notes" which appears on the top of every netLibrary page except for the eBook content pages.
- If another eBook is open on-screen, other than the one which requires editing:
- Click onto "Home" on the top left of the screen.
- Then click onto "Favorites and Notes."
- If another eBook is open on-screen, other than the one which requires editing:
- A list will display of all favorites as well as the notes that were crafted.
- Note that there are click-on options provided above the list that can be used to change the sort order of the listed favorites.
- Go to the note that requires editing, and click on its "Edit Note" option.
- The note will display in the notepad.
- Insert additions or edit the text as needed.
- Click "Save Changes."
- A confirming note -- "Your changes have been saved." -- will appear on top, beneath the "Favorites and Notes" title.
How to delete a note:
- To delete a note, click onto the "Remove" option that appears beneath a note.
- There is no "undo" option. Once the "Remove" option is clicked onto, the note is permanently removed.
- When the "Remove" option is selected beneath a note, only that note will be removed. If there are other notes saved for that eBook, they will not be affected; they will remain saved in the customer's virtual bookshelf, still attached to that title.
- If a customer has many notes for an eBook and wants to remove all of them, it may be quicker to remove the eBook from the customer's favorites. Once the title is deleted from favorites, the customer can tag the eBook again as a favorite and start afresh with crafting notes for the item.
- If not already logged in, do so at this time.
- Click onto "Favorites and Notes" located on the top of the netLibrary homepage as well as every netLibrary page except for the pages that display an open eBook.
- If an eBook is open on-screen, click "Home" in order to switch to a screen that has "Favorites and Notes" on top.
- The "Favorites and Notes" page/s will then display.
- The notes will display in list format for instant viewing.
- The default is set to display all favorites in the order of newest-to-the- list-first, with full notes.
- These view options can be changed by clicking onto the selections in the green bar beneath the page title "Favorites and Notes."
- In addition to viewing the notes, any of the three options displayed beneath each note can be used, if needed.

Adding Account Preferences
Customers can change their account passwords and their other account information by clicking onto "Edit My Account," which displays on the top of every netLibrary page except for the eBook content pages.
Customers can also specify the following actions via the "Edit My Account" link.
- Language used on the netLibrary Web site can be specified.
- The eBook's language cannot be changed. However, the rest of the netLibrary Web site can be changed from the default interface of English to either Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, or Thai.
- The language change for the interface can be saved so that it becomes the new default for logged-in use.
- The number of items that are displayed on a search results page can be specified.
- The default is set for 100 search results. Lowering that number will increase the response time of a search.
- Customers can choose not to include eBook covers with search results.
- This will increase the response time of a search.

Use Guide for OverDrive
The OverDrive use guide, which appears on the following pages, is a compilation of information found on its Web pages and in its tutorials.
- Beneath each section of the use guide are links to jump to the ebooks welcome page, the ebooks overview, the OverDrive use guide's introduction and list of topics, and the netLibrary use guide.
- The Back button can be used to return to the area in the use guide previous to the jump.
- Links to the OverDrive homepage are provided throughout these pages.
- The links will open the homepage in a separate window, which will enable viewing and use of these pages while also navigating the OverDrive Web site.
Following are the subjects that are covered in the OverDrive use guide. As mentioned, each topic and subtopic is also a link that can be clicked onto, to jump directly to that area of the guide.
1. Basics of OverDrive and Limits
Basics
As mentioned in the eBooks overview, OverDrive is Broward County Library's eBook section that has items that are downloaded to a customer's computer or portable device that is equipped with the required software. There are various formats of OverDrive eBooks; most items can be viewed or listened to offline; all items require specific software, which is provided at no charge.
- The OverDrive videos are a high-speed Internet product that requires an online connection for use.
- The other OverDrive materials require an Internet connection only for the check-out process; the items can then be viewed or listened to offline.
- The required software for all formats is provided at no charge and is easily downloaded directly from the library's OverDrive Web page.
Borrowing OverDrive eBooks is similar to online shopping. Customers:
- Navigate the site to browse the collection.
- Click onto items to put eBooks in their virtual carts for possible check-out.
- Make final selections from their virtual carts.
- Check out the eBooks.
- Download the eBooks to a computer or system. (The download can, perhaps, be compared to the delivery of the item to the customer's "home.")
Following are the main Limits that are in place for the OverDrive loan process:
- The eBook a customer puts into a virtual cart will be held there, temporarily reserved for the customer, for 30 minutes.
- If the item is not checked out within 30 minutes, it is automatically removed from the cart and returned to the collection.
- During a browse session, up to 12 eBooks can be put into a virtual cart at one time.
- Items can be returned to the collection and other items selected and put into the cart in their place, but only 12 in the cart at one time.
- The maximum number of eBooks that can be checked out at any given time is 10.
- The loan period for an OverDrive eBook varies. The loan period for most videos is 7 days; for other items, typically it is 21 days.
- At expiration, the eBook that has been downloaded to a computer system or device is geared to deny access to its contents.
- At expiration, the eBook that has been downloaded to a computer system or device is geared to deny access to its contents.

2. How to Access OverDrive
How the Homepage Displays
How to Access OverDrive
Whether a customer uses a public computer at a Broward County Library location or accesses the library's Web site, www.broward.org/library, from an external location, the quickest entry to OverDrive is via the left navigation panel of the library's Web site.
- Click onto "Find Materials" in the left navigation panel.
- Click onto "eBooks" from the drop-down menu that will display.
- "Welcome to Broward County Library's eBooks," the pages you are now reading, will display on-screen. Links are provided throughout these pages to go directly to the OverDrive homepage.
- Click onto any OverDrive link provided on these pages to go to the OverDrive Web site.
- The OverDrive homepage will open in a separate window -- to enable viewing and use of these pages along with the OverDrive Web site.
There are other entry points to the OverDrive section; those entry points are direct links without the addition of these pages.
- For example, there is an OverDrive link in the library's Online Resources. The"Online Resources" link appears as a tab on the top of every Visual Catalog page as well as in the left navigation panel on most library Web pages.
- To access, click "Online Resources," then "EBooks & Audio Books," then "OverDrive."
How the OverDrive Homepage Displays
When customers enter the OverDrive site, its homepage will display with three basic areas:
- A variety of eBooks will be highlighted in the main section of the page.
- Various click-on options and eBook categories will display in the left navigation panel.
- A search box will display on the top of the page.
Those three areas of the homepage are used to select eBooks for browsing and check-out, which is explained further in this guide.

3. Browsing the OverDrive Collection and Checking Out eBooks
The actions to browse/select and check out OverDrive eBooks follow a similar pattern to the actions taken when visiting a physical library.
- Navigating online to view the eBooks in the various categories is not that much different than navigating physically through the various bookshelves and sections in a library.
- Using mouse clicks to put eBooks in a virtual cart to later keep or remove items for check-out is not that much different than accumulating an armful of materials while browsing at the library and then leaving some items on the table and checking others out.
- Check-out for both requires that the materials be recorded as on loan by the customer, which is accomplished with the Broward County Library card number.
- And the download of eBooks can, perhaps, be thought of as the online way to getting the materials home.
Following are the online steps for browsing/selecting and checking out OverDrive eBooks:
- When the OverDrive homepage is accessed, a customer can log in, if desired, or browse and select items in the eBook collection without logging in.
- If not logged in, the customer will receive a prompt during the navigation if clicking onto any action that requires a sign-in.
- To log in at entry, if desired:
- Click onto "Login," which appears on the top right of the homepage in the blue bar.
- Enter the Broward County Library card number, and click "Sign In."
- A "My Account" page will then display, with account options in the main area (explained further in this guide), the standard click-on options in the left panel, and the search options on the top of the page.
- The customer can remain on this page and use the left panel and the search box for browsing and selection or can return to the homepage, which has the featured eBooks in the main area.
- To return to the homepage for full navigation choices, click onto "eCollection Home" in the blue bar on the top of the page.
- To display an eBook or a selection of eBooks, whether on the OverDrive homepage or on the "My Account" page, a customer would use any or all of the following actions:
- Click onto an eBook cover featured in the main area of the homepage.
- Click onto a category in the left panel of either page.
- Conduct a search using the search box on the top of either page.
- Click onto "My Wish List" if on the "My Account" page. (Note:The points detailed directly below do not necessarily apply to Wish List, which is explained further in this guide.)
- When eBook covers are clicked onto or when lists display with full information, customers will then be able to perform various actions. They can:
- Click onto "Add to cart" -- to put eBooks into a virtual cart for consideration of check-out or for check-out during the current session.
- Click onto "Place a hold" - this option will display in place of the "Add to cart" when the eBook is currently unavailable for check-out.
- Click onto "Add to wish list"-- to save eBook titles into their accounts for possible consideration during future sessions.
- Click onto "Recommend this title to a friend" -- to send an e-mail to a friend about the eBook via a form that will display with entry fields of "to," "from," and "message."
- Click onto "eCollection Home" to return to the homepage for further browsing, searching, and selection. (The web browser's "Back" button can be used as well.)
- Or the customer can merely view the information for the selection/s on-screen and then exit the site without taking any other action.
- Clicking onto "Add to cart" places an eBook into a virtual cart, which temporarily reserves that eBook for the customer while the customer continues to browse.
- Each time the "Add to cart" option is clicked onto, a page will display that:
- Reminds the customer that the item will be held in the cart for 30 minutes and then returned to the collection.
- Provides specific information about the eBook: its loan period, its format, and the compatible electronic devices for use.
- Provides three click-on options: "Remove," "Continue Browsing," and "Proceed to Checkout."
- Up to 12 eBooks can be kept in a virtual cart at one time during the session, using the "Add to cart" option.
- The cart's contents can be viewed at any time while navigating the site by clicking onto "My Cart" on the top of the page.
- Selections can be removed from the cart at any time via "My Cart" to make place in the cart for other selections.
- Selections can also be removed from the cart at the point of check-out.
- The maximum number of eBooks a customer can have checked out at any given time is 10.
- Information will display at the point of check-out advising of the number of eBooks already checked out.
- The maximum number of eBooks a customer can have checked out at any given time is 10.
The "Place a hold" is the option that displays instead of "Add to cart" when an eBook title is not available for check-out.
- A customer may place a hold for a maximum of 10 eBooks at one given time. This is in addition to the eBooks checked out.
- In other words, a customer may have both the maximum 10 eBooks checked out and the maximum of 10 eBooks on hold at one given time -- 10 and 10.
- Clicking onto "Place a hold" will bring a form on-screen for entry of an e-mail address where the customer can be notified when the item becomes available.
- When the item becomes available, the e-mail the customer will receive will contain instructions on how to check out the eBook (an easy process via the "My Account" tab).
- The message will also explain that the eBook will be held for two days (day one is the date of the e-mail), and if not checked out within those two days, the eBook will be returned to the collection.
- To view at any time which books are on hold, a customer would click onto the "My Account" tab on the top of the page, and then click "My Holds."
- When the hold summary is displayed, the customer will also be able to click onto two options next to each item: "Remove" or "Edit."
- Edit is used to change the customer's e-mail address that will be used for receipt of the notice of the item's availability.)
- When the hold summary is displayed, the customer will also be able to click onto two options next to each item: "Remove" or "Edit."
The "Add to wish list" Option
The "Add to wish list" option is used when customers want to save eBook titles to their account for check-out consideration in the future.
- Clicking onto "Add to wish list" displays a box that confirms the eBook title has been added to the customer's wish list.
- Included in the confirmation box will be the click-on options of "Continue Browsing" or "View My Wish List."
- Clicking onto "Continue Browsing" will return the customer to the description page for the eBook added to the wish list.
- Clicking the browser's Back button will return the customer to the previous screen.
- Clicking onto "View My Wish List" displays a customer's wish list and offers the options of "Add to cart" or "Remove" for each item.
- A return to previous screens can be accomplished using the browser's Back button.
- Clicking onto "Continue Browsing" will return the customer to the description page for the eBook added to the wish list.
- Included in the confirmation box will be the click-on options of "Continue Browsing" or "View My Wish List."
- The wish list can be viewed, and its options exercised, at any time by clicking onto the "My Account" tab and then "My Wish List."
The "Proceed to checkout" Option
When ready to check out, a customer would click onto the "Proceed to Checkout" option.
- If not previously logged in, the customer will be prompted to do so.
- Sign-in is accomplished by entering the Broward County Library card number.
- Certain formats of eBooks that a customer may have in the cart for check-out can bring specific screens to display next.
- Example: For MP3 formats, a download agreement will appear on-screen for the customer to accept or decline terms.
- Acceptance of terms is necessary to proceed to check-out.
- If choosing to decline the terms, a customer can remove the MP3 item from the cart in order to continue the check-out process for the other items.
- Clicking onto the Back button will return the customer to prior screens that have the "Remove" option.
- Once the item is removed, the customer would click onto the "Proceed to Checkout" option again.
- Example: For Mobipocket eBooks, if a customer has not registered a Mobipocket device into the system, the customer will be prompted to do so at that time.
- Registration is required before check-out can proceed.
- If choosing not to register, a customer may remove the Mobipocket eBook from the cart in order to continue the check-out process for the other items.
- Clicking onto the Back button will return the customer to prior screens that have the "Remove" option.
- Once the item is removed, the customer would click onto the "Proceed to Checkout" option again.
- Example: For MP3 formats, a download agreement will appear on-screen for the customer to accept or decline terms.
- Typically, the first screen that displays after clicking onto "Proceed to Checkout" will display:
- A list of all the items that are in the customer's cart.
- Included will be the loan period for each title.
- Included will be the format of each eBook.
- Included will be the play device/system for each eBook. The buttons that are highlighted indicate the compatible device/system.
- Included will be a "Remove" option for each item.
- A summary of the customer's overall check-out position.
- A list of all the items that are in the customer's cart.
- The "Confirm check out" option is the last object on the page. Clicking onto the option completes the check-out process.
- The next and final step is download. (See next section.)

- If the customer wants to postpone the download process -- whether the customer is not at the system or device that has the required software or whether the customer prefers to delay downloading -- the customer would:
- On the Download page that displays after check-out is confirmed, the customer would not click a download option but would, instead, click onto "Logout" on the top right of the screen.
- When ready to download, the customer would access OverDrive from the www.broward.org/library Web site.
- Click onto the "My Account" tab.
- Sign in with the Broward County Library card number.
- Select "My Bookshelf."
- If there is more than one item in "My Bookshelf, " downloads need to be done one at a time.

- Once an eBook is checked out, it will remain in the customer's "My Bookshelf" for the length of the loan period and downloading can be done at any time during that period.
- Each item's expiration date is displayed in "My Bookshelf."
- The expiration date of the eBook, which is the date the item will be automatically returned to the library, will remain as indicated and is not dependent on when the eBook is downloaded.
- Once an eBook is checked out, it will remain in the customer's "My Bookshelf" for the length of the loan period and downloading can be done at any time during that period.
- If eBooks are checked out but never downloaded, the item will be automatically removed from the customer's "My Bookshelf" at the end of the loan period. No action is required by the customer.
- No matter what action is taken or not taken, the checked-out eBook will no longer be accessible to the customer as of the expiration date.
- If, for any reason, an eBook needs to be re-downloaded, the customer merely performs the download again from "My Bookshelf." Re-downloading checked-out eBooks can be done anytime during the duration of their loan period.

5. Downloading the OverDrive Software
OverDrive software is required in order to read/view/listen to an OverDrive eBook. The software is available at no charge to customers, the links for download are easily accessed via the OverDrive Web pages, and the download process is conducted with user-friendly screen prompts and help links. Each software only needs to be downloaded once. There are three software products:
- OverDrive Media Console
- Adobe Digital Editions
- Mobipocket Reader
The eBook's format determines which software is required. Since the format of each eBook is clearly indicated on the OverDrive Web pages, customers will know which software is necessary for use. Some customers prefer to download all three products, anticipating that they will at some point in the future check out all three eBook formats. Other customers prefer to download the software as they need it.
The software can be downloaded to a customer's system/device at any time.
- Links for each software download as well as information about each software, are provided in the "Digital Software" box that displays in the left navigation panel of the OverDrive Web pages.
- Click onto any software. Step-by-step instructions as well as information are provided.
- When check-out has been completed, a link for the software required for use of the checked-out item will also display on the Download page for use by customers who have not yet downloaded that particular software.
- The "Click here to download the software needed to use..." option displays in sentence style beneath the format of the eBook.
- If the customer already has the software installed, this link would be ignored, and the customer would only click onto the "Download" icon displayed beneath the cover to download the eBook
- After downloading the software for that format, the customer would return to download the eBook.
- The "Click here to download the software needed to use..." option displays in sentence style beneath the format of the eBook.
- The "Help" tab that appears on the top of every OverDrive Web page links to a list of help topics. Included is software information that is handily categorized by eBook format and contains solid details.
- Various tutorials are also offered on the OverDrive Web pages.
As mentioned, each software only needs to be downloaded once. It is then saved to the customer's system/device, with its icon conveniently set on the customer's desktop. The only download the customer will need to do in the future is to download the checked-out eBook.
The software for audiobooks and videos:
- OverDrive Media Console
- The eBooks that require this software are termed on the OverDrive Web pages as either:
- An OverDrive WMA Audiobook
- An OverDrive MP3 Audiobook
- An OverDrive Video
- The software can be downloaded to most Windows computers.
- Regarding the audiobooks:
- The software has a transfer wizard for transferring to portable devices such as iPods and iPhones
- The software has a built-in Burn Wizard that allows audiobooks to be burned to CDs (where permitted by the publisher)
- The MP3 Audiobooks are compatible with many different devices including many cell phones, PDAs, and most portable music devices.
- Regarding the videos:
- The OverDrive Video is a high-speed Internet-only product.
- It requires a Windows Media Player 9 Series (or newer) -- which can be downloaded at no charge from the site.
- Once done, this process will not need to be repeated.
- The Windows Media Security Upgrade will then need to be performed before Microsoft Windows Media Player will allow any DRM-protected files to be downloaded.
- A security measure, the security upgrade identifies the copy of Windows Media Player with the computer on which Windows Media Player is being used. Publishers often require this sort of security in order to discourage the unlawful redistribution of digital content.
- Once done, this process will not need to be repeated.
- Note: The videos may take a long time to download to a customer's system.
- However, once the download is completed, the video is saved to the customer's system for the duration of the loan period and can be quickly and easily accessed via the OverDrive Media Console icon that appears on the customer's desktop.
- Most of the videos are downloaded piecemeal -- one part at a time. Once one part is downloaded,
- A customer can view part one while downloading part two, etc.
- A customer can close the video without viewing it, and download the other parts another time or not at all.
- The eBooks that require this software are termed on the OverDrive Web pages as either:
The software for PDF and Mobipocket eBooks
- Adobe Digital Editions
- The eBooks that require this software are termed as an Adobe PDF eBook on the OverDrive Web pages.
- The software:
- There is an Adobe Digital Edition for Windows as well as an Adobe Digital Edition for Macintosh.
- Adobe PDF eBooks can also be transferred to a Sony Reader.
- Mobipocket Reader
- The eBooks that require this software are termed as a Mobipocket eBook on the OverDrive Web pages.
- The software:
- The Mobipocket Reader is a universal eBook Reader for Windows® computers (desktop/laptop/tablet) running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista® as well as Smartphones and most PDAs.
- The software has many special features, which are detailed on its Web site, and it supports use of IR (infrared), Bluetooth technologies, and email to send eBooks to wireless accounts.

As previously mentioned, the loan period for an OverDrive eBook varies. Typically, the videos are loaned for 7 days and the other formats loaned for 21 days. The loan period for each eBook appears in the Format Information section on the eBook's details page.
At the end of the loan period, the file that contains the eBook material that has been downloaded to the computer system or device is geared to deny access to its contents. The downloaded eBook is not actually returned to the OverDrive collection; instead, the downloaded eBook becomes a nonfunctional file at the end of the loan period.
The only OverDrive eBooks that can be returned early are the Adobe Digital Editions. The other formats of the OverDrive eBooks must be returned automatically. If a customer wants to manually return OverDrive Adobe-format eBooks -- perhaps the customer wants to check out additional titles and has already checked out the maximum allowed -- easy-to-follow instructions for an early return are found on the OverDrive Web site:
- Click onto "Help" on the top of the OverDrive Web pages.
- Click onto "Borrowing Help," which appears in the first cluster of topics.
- Scroll down the list, and click onto "Can I return my items early?"

7. Deleting Expired eBook Files
Whether an OverDrive eBook has been returned automatically or manually to the collection, the expired files remain on a customer's computer or device. The files' contents cannot be accessed; however, the files continue taking up storage space on the customer's computer or device until the files are deleted.
Easy-to-follow instructions on how to delete expired files from a computer or device are found on the OverDrive Web site:
- Click onto "Help" on the top of the OverDrive Web pages.
- Click onto "Borrowing Help," which appears in the first cluster of topics.
- Scroll down the list, and click onto "Once the loan period is over, what happens to the title I checked out?"
