Hollywood Branch photoOne of the three founding libraries of the Broward County Libraries system (along with the Mizell and Riverland Branch Libraries), the Hollywood Branch was built in 1959 as a city library. It was incorporated into the county system in 1974 and eventually outgrew its quarters and moved across the street into a new building on June 8, 2006. The library occupies the first floor of an immense square and pristine white two-story building sitting on the south side of the traffic circle at 2600 Hollywood Boulevard, just west of South 26th Avenue. The library is a partnership between Broward County and the City of Hollywood.

Hollywood Branch computer center
Along with the move to a bigger space, the library more than tripled the number of computers available to the public. Library customers have access to 56 computers, with 24 of those available in a computer room where technology workshops and classes can be taught. There are 100,000 items available, including an up-to-date collection of books, videos, CDs and periodicals.

The library is spacious and welcoming on the inside with study rooms available for students, smaller tutoring rooms that can be used for one-on-one teaching of language skills and reading skills, and one room set aside just for storytelling and youth service programs.

Among the programs at the library are the English Café, the Spanish Club, Afterschool @ Your Library, Multicultural Storytime activities, Bedtime Stories and Toddler Activities, and computer literacy classes in English and Spanish. There are Small Business Development consultations, discussion groups, and talks by local experts.

Hollywood Branch customers
The Hollywood Branch is a family-oriented library, involved with local schools. Attendance at the library noticeably increased after Hurricane Andrew sent people scurrying northwards. Moving to their new building in 2006 has attracted many more customers as well. Although this library is not a regional one, it is an exceptionally busy one, and one of the few neighborhood libraries that is open seven days a week.

Hollywood Branch Grus Pacifica window of art
The library features some artistic touches. Papier-mâché sea creatures can be found lingering in the children's section, and one of the windows at the library's entrance features a huge circle made up of hundreds of pieces of paper. In the Public Art and Design project Grus Pacifica, tiny squares of paper arranged along the outside edge of the circle progressively fold their way to completion into origami cranes at the center of the design. During the library's grand opening celebrations, volunteers taught library visitors how to fold the auspicious origami crane.
