The Lauderhill Towne Centre Branch Library is one large room with different quadrants containing a children's section, a computer section, tables and chairs, and shelves of books and audio video materials. Though rather small in size, the library has a heart for the community. Located at 6399 W. Oakland Park Boulevard in Lauderhill, the library draws in a variety of ethnic groups -- including Haitians, Jamaicans, and Jewish senior citizens. And it attracts a lot of kids!

This library, opened in 2004, is very much a family library, and there are opportunities for parents and children to learn technical skills together. The library is purchasing additional laptop computers to use in the multipurpose room for class sessions with families. There is also a family health program to teach healthy eating habits and exercise regimens.

Children from kindergarten through fifth grade can learn math, social studies and reading skills through the Leap Frog computer program. There is an After School at the Library program that meets each school day, with a group of around 15 kids who get help with their homework and play games. The library boasts a large collection of juvenile nonfiction to help children with writing reports and biographies.

Teenagers have their place in the library programs, with Teen Tuesdays scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. each week. The teens help plan their own programming, and help younger children brush up their reading skills through a Teen Reading Mentor Program.

Students of all ages have access to material that will help them boost their FCAT scores in school, and learn about careers. Children are encouraged to express themselves in poetry and are given a chance to share their poems (or "clean" rap songs) with others at open mic sessions.

For adults, there are materials to study for the GED, and to study for the postal workers' exam and citizenship exam. Adult programs include English Café for learning conversational English, and Book Talk which features book reviews. Each One Teach One is a literacy program where volunteers help adults learn English skills.

As with all libraries, computers are very popular among all age groups. Although the library has 22 public computers, more portable, laptop computers are on the way. The library has wireless computer capability to serve those who bring their own laptop computers. Also, some popular items in the library are the new videos, musical CDs and best-selling books.

The Lauderhill Towne Centre Branch Library is poised for increasing its resources and programming, with a vision to serve the community and make an impact on the lives of the people who use the library.
