Spacious and bright, colorful and inviting, North Regional/BCC Library is both a Broward County library and a campus library for Broward Community College North Campus. Featuring long architectural lines and sweeping arches over second-story windows, its elegant design by architect Oscar Vagi and Associates is complemented by a park-like setting of lawn and trees. Opened in 1994, the library is located at 1100 Coconut Creek Boulevard in Coconut Creek, just west of Florida's Turnpike at Exit 67. At 103,600 square feet, North Regional/BCC Library is one of the county's largest libraries open to the public with 250,000 items and over 100 computers for public use.
The courteous and professional staff welcomes all users. Public library and college library functions share an open and attractive layout that benefits both partners of this joint use library. College students and faculty members are delighted to find popular library features readily available, while residents and visitors benefit from specialized community college-level collections and in-depth programs featuring college faculty and participating students. Together with its sister library, South Regional/BCC Library, Broward's two public/community college libraries serve as successful models for many joint-use libraries across the country.
With the goal of meeting a wide range of library needs, the facility features a large collection of books, DVD's, CD's, computer software, magazines, newspapers, and other materials for toddlers to adults, including academic support materials up to the community college level. The collection also includes a selection of popular items in several languages. Of particular note is one of Florida's largest collections on deafness and hearing loss available in a public library, also available through interlibrary loan to users outside Broward County.
A panorama of free programs for all ages is offered during the library's extensive hours of operation. Literary and film discussions, exhibits, performances, and lectures enhance the library's role as a center for lifelong learning. Community members may increase their computer skills through hands-on classes in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Haitian Creole. Attendees can start from scratch and grow their computer knowledge, from how to use the mouse to how to search the Internet, and dabble in PhotoShop or web design along the way.
Cultural program opportunities such as the Ruth E. Cohan Jewish Book Review series educate, entertain, and celebrate Broward's diverse mix of heritages. "Kids Learn Spanish" introduces children to the wonders of learning a second language. "The English Café" is an informal conversational practice ground for adults who wish to improve their English-speaking skills. "El Club de Conversación en Español" invites adult English language speakers to enhance their ability to speak and understand Spanish. Special programs of interest for the Deaf Community have included an American Sign Language Literacy Festival and a visit by Miss Deaf America.
Volunteer services greatly enhance the library's offerings to the public. The Friends of North Regional/BCC Library sponsor an award-winning free tutoring program for elementary school students. Up to 50 adult volunteers tutor an equal number of children at the library in reading and math, one on one, for an hour each week. Beyond improved academic skills, participants also benefit from quality time spent with a mentor. In cases where parents may be working multiple jobs, and for those who may be adjusting to Florida as a new homeland, partnerships with a Friends tutor provide stability that often helps children to succeed. Volunteer Literacy Tutors also work one on one with adult students improving their reading skills.
Friends' Fancy, the Friends of the Library gift shop, is a popular spot for Friends volunteers to help library users with a selection of snacks, gifts, stationery items, and information about the many ways Friends members advocate for library support. Additionally, volunteers work throughout the library in office support roles that help boost the library's efficiency.
Library users can look forward to new programs provided through support from the American Library Association, the Broward Public Library Foundation, the Friends of North Regional/BCC Library, and other community partners. Teens will gain experience designing their own computer games through a "Tech Lab" technology grant. "Florida Stories" aims to makes stories come alive for adults in dramatic readings by local professional actors. "Brazil ao Vivo" will welcome children of Brazilian heritage and introduces their families to the library's services. "Wags & Tales" will continue encouraging children to practice their "read aloud" skills to a pet therapy dog in a non-judgmental environment. Join the library and be a lifelong learner at North Regional/BCC Library!
