Get Caught Reading
There is a nationwide happening in May that involves the support of a wide range of celebrities, such as Alicia Keys, Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Graham, Rosie O'Donnell, Dolly Parton, The Rugrats, Jane Seymour, Sammy Sosa, Spider Man, Robin Williams, Jorge Ramos, LL Cool J, Batman, Gloria Estefan; the list of names goes on and on -- celebrities, sports stars, members of Congress, and other well-known figures. All of these celebrities have something in common: Each has been tagged "caught reading" by the Association of American Publishers (AAP). These GET CAUGHT READING celebrities have admitted they love to read and, quite happily, they are lending their names and images to support the national celebration of Get Caught Reading Month in May and the year-long Get Caught Reading campaign.
The Get Caught Reading campaign, started in1999 by former-Congresswoman Pat Schroeder to encourage the book and magazine publishing industries to join forces to promote the sheer joy of reading, features these celebrities -- people that are recognizable to the majority of the population but who may not be typically associated with reading as well as animated characters that appeal to children -- on various Get Caught Reading signs, displays, and celebrity posters. With books in hand, these pictured celebrities serve as attention-getting cues, reminding people how much fun it is to read. Some of their pictures are featured in the May issue of Broward County Library's E-Newsletter that can be accessed from the left navigation panel on the library's Web site, www.broward.org/library.
Join the fun - in May as well as all year-long. Take the time to just relax and enjoy a good read. Discover or rediscover those books that are just right for you, and GET CAUGHT READING. You'll be in good company.
