December 5 - Haiti "discovered" by Christopher Colombus in 1492.

December 6 - Everglades National Park Established in 1947.

December 10 - Melvil Dewey, inventor of the Dewey Decimal System, born in Adams Center, NY in 1851.

December 12 - First African-American, Joseph Hayne Rainey of South Carolina, was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in 1870.
