Explore Black History Month

Broward County residents have an amazing opportunity to explore Black History Month with one of only a handful of specialized libraries focusing on the history and people of African, African-American, and Caribbean decent. The African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) is located on historic Sistrunk Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. This beautiful facility offers customers an opportunity to explore different facets of Black History Month. The first floor offers a museum with displays and artwork. The Harambee Room offers a place for reflection and unity.
Upstairs, AARLCC has a library, small business resource center, and a computer lab. The library’s Special Collections are also housed with extraordinary care on the second floor. Black History Month is the perfect time to explore the significance of the library’s Special Collections and their impact on the community.
The family of Esther Rolle donated precious memories including artwork, plaques, dresses and her actual Emmy award. The Alex Haley Special Collection features personal letters, photos, and unfinished manuscripts. The Special Collections also include original paintings, first-edition books, and one-of-a-kind items.
Take the time to Explore Black History at AARLCC this month and click on the February issue of Bookings for Black History Month programs and events throughout the county.

Web Site Launches New Look
Broward County Library’s Web site, www.broward.org/library, will launch a new homepage on Monday, February 4. This new look will synergize the site with the needs of customers. From July through November 2007, customers were given a chance to voice their input selecting the most essential online features. Customers were also asked for feedback in the development of an online portal, which they selected the name My Library Online and the logo.
