Celebrate Black History Month
Join Broward County Library in February as we celebrate Black History
Month. During February, Broward County Library locations will offer
many special events to commemorate Black History Month, including
book groups and discussions, presentations on African-American genealogy,
films, musical performances, and seminars as well as children's and
teen programs to enrich, enlighten and entertain.
In this issue of E-Newsletter, you can find out about Broward County's
own heroes of Black History Month - the men and women of our hometowns
who struggled against prejudice and fought for civil rights, education,
and social change in Broward County. Whom is Sistrunk Boulevard named
for? Which early civil rights activists paved the way for integration
in Broward schools and beaches? Read about the people who made a difference,
learn their stories, and find out where you can get more information
on Black History in Broward.
This month is also a great time to discover The African-American Research
Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), one of only a handful of libraries
of its kind in the United States. Filled with a treasure trove of
materials and resources unique to its facility, AARLCC provides you
with an opportunity to touch history through its priceless Special
Collections. See an actual manuscript by Roots author Alex
Haley, hear oral histories from early pioneers of Broward County,
listen to historic jazz and blues music, and view unique art from
Haiti and the Caribbean.
You'll also learn about The African American Experience, a free database
that offers a staggering array of materials related to Black History
Month including articles, images and recordings not found anywhere
else.
