Volunteering at Your Library

Make a difference in your community and your life by volunteering at Broward County Library

From students to senior citizens, Broward County Library’s volunteer team helps keep things running smoothly at libraries countywide. Volunteers undertake many tasks, from administrative duties to assisting with programs, books sales and events. With hundreds of volunteers donating thousands of hours of their time, Broward County Library is a great place to give back to your community and make your library even better.

Volunteers – What They Do

Want to get involved in your library by volunteering? Your skills, talent and time are all that’s needed to get started. Here’s just a few ways you can get involved:

  • Join your local Friends group. The Friends of the Libraries help with fundraising efforts, including book fairs and other events, along with helping to generate ideas for supporting programs. Friends groups meet monthly and are open to any adult interested in supporting the library.

  • Teen volunteers are always needed! Teens can earn valuable community service hours necessary for graduation, learn new skills, and get valuable real-life work experience that looks great on resumes and college applications.

Teen volunteers are always needed! Teens can earn valuable community service hours necessary for graduation, learn new skills, and get valuable real-life work experience that looks great on resumes and college applications. Teen volunteers work shelving and cleaning books and materials, as peer tutors and reading buddies to younger children, and assisting library staff with Youth Service programs. After volunteering for a certain amount of hours, teens can become members of their library’s Teen Advisory Board, which makes recommendations for teen programs and materials.

  • Special events such as the Children’s BookFest and the Storybook Festival are a great way to get involved and have fun. Volunteer to be a costumed character, help with book giveaways, man booths, and assist customers during these action-packed events.

  • Literacy volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of others by teaching adults how to read. Each One Teach One is a one-on-one program that provides volunteer training in literacy, reading materials, and quiet areas for reading practice.

  • Bi- or even tri-lingual? Broward County Library has myriad opportunities to help speakers of other languages learn English and improve their speaking and reading skills. Whether you speak Spanish, Creole, Portuguese or another language, BCL could use your assistance in helping others through our English Café and Crossroads Café programs.
