The Ashley Bryan Art Series Conference
November 17 and 18

Bookings magazineIt’s not just about the books or the pictures or even the story itself – it’s about the message that African-American children have a voice in literature and that early reading is crucial to a child’s social and academic development.

The Ashley Bryan Art Series Conference, held each year in mid-November, is a continuing education series geared toward teachers, librarians, literacy professionals and anyone else interested in the role of children’s literature in improving reading appreciation and skills. Panel discussions and lectures, dance and song performances as well as hands-on workshops for crafts and activities geared toward children’s literacy are presented. Past conferences have featured bookmaking workshops, nationally renowned guest speakers, cowry shell bookmark crafts, folktale tellers, and the opportunity to meet top children’s authors and artists.

Ashley Bryan, who received the prestigious Arbuthnot Prize for children’s literature, has written or illustrated more than 30 children’s books including the Coretta Scott King Award winner Beat the Story Drum, Pum-Pum.

The Ashley Bryan Art Series Conference is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required.

On November 17 from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m., the Professional Conference will take place. Then on November 18, the Community Art Project featuring Bryan Collier will occur from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
