Did You Know?
Why are libraries more important than ever to our community? As our budgets get tighter
and tighter, the library becomes even more important. Here’s why:
  • Have fun – for free. Almost everything at Broward County Library is available at no cost. Ticket prices at the movies got you down? Free feature DVDs are available; you can even sign up to get e-mail notification of the latest DVD releases. Why spend $20 or more on the latest bestseller – when it’s free at your library? Wireless access at home costs too much? Each BCL location has free Wi-Fi. BCL also offers free movie screenings as well as music and dance performances, comedians, magicians and more.

  • Learn – for free. Pick up a new computer skill, get info on starting a business, learn to belly dance or trace your ancestors. Take a course on cooking, prep for the SATs, the GED or the citizenship test. Teens can get free homework help or assistance with projects and papers, find out how to write a resume, or apply for jobs online. Children can learn karate, practice reading with a pet therapy dog and learn about distant lands and historic people.

  • Get your game on – for free. Whether your game is chess, Rock Band, Dance Dance Revolution, or Wii Bowling, there’s something for almost everyone.

  • Travel the world – for free. Even if your vacation budget is a little low this year, why not starting planning for a future trip? Get excited and research your dream destinations using free resources here at the library. Check out maps and itineraries, pick up language books and tapes, and even read books and magazines from destination.

  • Create – for free. BCL offers a number of writing workshops; share and get feedback on your short stories, novel, or screenplay, or participate in an open mike night or poetry slam. Take a course in digital photography or origami. Children and teens can participate in craft classes; learn origami or practice knitting or macramé.
  • Escape – for free. Get out of the house and head to your library. Check out travel books and videos and take a vacation from home. Bury yourself in a good book or browse the latest magazines. Read a newspaper from your hometown.

  • Build or fix it – for free. With the high cost of everything now, the luxury of home improvements make take a backseat to the necessity of gas and food. There’s a how-to book on almost everything: home repairs, gardening, interior design and more. Why pay someone when you can do it yourself?

  • Contribute – for free. Give the gift of time by volunteering at your library. Volunteers are needed for everything from library tours to literacy tutoring and more.

  • Get healthy – for free. Many BCL locations offer free medical screenings for children, adults and seniors. You can get free amplified phones for the hard-of-hearing, or attend a seminar on breast cancer or acupuncture. Take a free yoga class or visit a family nutrition program and learn how to make healthy, low-cost meals.

  • Make friends – for free. Join like-minded people and gather to discuss books, play chess, debate current events or share art. Of all our area’s resources, the library probably attracts a wider cross-section of our community. Talk, laugh, grow, organize and reach out to others. Join a club or group, or start one.

  • Go green – for free. Libraries nationwide are on the forefront of the green moment. Sharing books and materials is not only good for your wallet, it’s good for the environment, cutting down on the waste of materials.

For whatever you’re looking for, there’s no better place than your library.
