Why is it Important to Read this Summer?

School’s out and summer is in, but that doesn’t mean learning has to stop. Studies show that while most students experience a drop in reading skills over the summer months, summer readers actually gain skills. Summer reading gives students the chance to catch up, keep up and even get ahead. Encouraging children to read builds lifelong readers with strong thinking, visualization and language abilities. While summer is the time for children to relax and enjoy some free time, encourage your child to make reading a part of their day-to-day routine. Try 20 minutes daily to get maximum benefit.

What is the Summer Reading Program?

The goal of the Florida Library Youth Program is to encourage children to be lifelong readers and library users while emphasizing the value and importance of library programs and services. While the Florida Library Youth Program does not provide formal reading instruction, it does provide numerous opportunities for children to discover the joy of reading. The Summer Reading Program encourages children and teens to read during their summer break to ensure that crucial literacy skills are maintained and improved. Prizes and awards are given for reading, and Broward County Library Youth Services Section has a whole summer full of programs and events, such as arts-and-crafts, story times, literacy-based activities, and just plain fun!

The Summer Reading Program also helps libraries to encourage children and teens to be consistent about their reading habits, as research shows that children who read a minimum of 20 minutes daily, five times weekly, can and do improve their reading skills over the summer.

Summer Reading Program events are held at Broward County Library locations in June, July and the beginning of August throughout the County. They provide activities for a wide range of interests and age groups.
