Main Library was Final Stop in National White Cane
Safety Day Event

White Cane Day 2006 Walkers

White canes and guide dogs helped lead a group of blind folks across Andrews Avenue to the Main Library on October 13 in recognition of National White Cane Safety Day. The group arrived safely after having spent 45 minutes crossing and re-crossing Broward Boulevard at West First Avenue. They did this exercise to help educate the public about a state law that requires drivers to come to a complete stop when a blind person carrying a white cane or accompanied by a guide dog attempts to cross a street.

Having finished their traffic safety lesson, the group gathered in front of the Library's auditorium, sweating a bit from their exertions, for the reading of a proclamation by City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle. Tom Ryan of the Greater Broward Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind received the proclamation and led the group inside the auditorium for a recap of the event and some speeches. Ryan, accompanied by his guide dog, thanked several people for their assistance to the blind, including Broward County Traffic Engineering's John Kleinedler, who is the contact person for his division to install and maintain audible traffic signals throughout the County.

Afterwards, there was a luncheon reception in the library lobby, with stirring piano music by Ryan. The reception was hosted by the Talking Books Library, located on the ground floor of the Main Library.
