How This Map Was Developed:
This bicycle suitability map is intended to serve as a reference for bicycling in Broward County. The primary factors considered were traffic speed, volume and outside lane width, however other factors including roadway grade, number of driveways, pavement condition, and adjacent land use were also considered. Each roadway's characteristics were collected and then rated according to a computer model developed at Auburn University and adapted for Broward County. The streets that are color coded were categorized according to how they scored on over 20 factors that affect bicycling. The preliminary results were field tested and the model was adjusted as necessary by local cyclists and transportation professionals.
How To Use This Map:
Not every cyclist will agree with all of the ratings. The ratings are to be used as a guide to how much interaction with traffic a bicyclist can expect. Once you have chosen a route it is best to drive it during the same hours and days you plan to ride it. Although it is not recommended that adult cyclists use sidewalks, this information is provided for those instances that the traffic conditions are beyond your skill level or you are riding with a child cyclist. If you do use the sidewalk it is important to remember that the bicycle-motor vehicle crashes occur most frequently when the bicyclist is riding on the sidewalk or against the flow of traffic. Using the sidewalk does not mean you have less chance of getting into a crash.
Broward County, the organizations and individuals involved in the development of this map assume no liability for the personal safety of individuals using this map. The route you choose depends on your skill level and how comfortable you are riding with traffic. Please keep in mind that bicyclists should be alert for hazardous conditions at all times. Each rider is encouraged to obtain appropriate safety equipment and observe all traffic laws.

Interaction Ratings:
Although these ratings are for on-road conditions, bicyclists using the sidewalk can expect similar increases in the amount of interaction with traffic. In general, riding on the sidewalk does not decrease the risk of getting involved in a bicycle/motor vehicle crash.

Orange Roadway conditions that require a moderate to high amount of interaction with traffic.

Red Roadway conditions that require a high to extremely high amount of interaction with traffic.
Types of On-Road Bicycle Facilities: Wide Curb Lane - A vehicular lane that is wider than the adjacent travel lanes to provide more room for the motorist to pass a bicyclist. Some roads in this category will have a lane stripe similar to a bike lane, but will not have a diamond symbol or bike lane signs. These lanes will be at least three feet wide.
Bike Lane - Any portion of the road that is specifically designated for bicycle use. Bike lanes are normally four feet wide, are adjacent to the road, and are designated by a bicycle symbol and signs.
It is important to remember that a bicyclist is not restricted to the bike lane; they have full use of the road.
Paved Shoulder - The outermost portion of a road that does not have curb and gutter construction. The paved shoulder is separated by a six inch white stripe and is at least four feet wide. It is not identified by signs. When riding on a paved shoulder do not follow the shoulder to the right of a right turn lane, you might get hit by a turning motorist.
