Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)?
The MPO is a transportation policy-making board comprised of 19 voting members including representatives from the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA), the Broward County School Board, and three Broward County Commissioners. It is responsible for the county’s Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and the Transit Development Plan (TDP).

How does the MPO affect you?
The Broward County MPO works with the general public, planning organizations, government agencies, elected officials, and community groups to develop transportation plans. When a project is being developed, your input is important to ensure local transportation issues are addressed and the desires of the community are heard.

What is the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP)?
The LRTP covers a 20-year period and is used by transportation officials and decision makers to guide the spending of transportation dollars for improvement projects. These improvement projects include bicycle, pedestrian, transit and roadway facilities. The LRTP is updated every three years and incorporates transportation projects conforming to the provisions of the federal 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). As such, the majority of transportation projects are environmentally friendly and consistent with community values.

What is the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)?
The TIP provides a comprehensive listing of local, county, state and federally funded transportation projects. The TIP is financially constrained and projects must meet the conformity requirements of the CAAA. The TIP covers a period of five years and is consistent with the LRTP.

What is the Transit Development Plan (TDP)?
The Transit Development Plan is a five-year plan addressing both operational and capital improvements for the Transit System.

How can I become involved in the planning process and have my voice heard?
