Broward County residents may drop off for one day only: paint, solvents, pesticides, household cleaners, lawn and pool chemicals, mercury thermometers, motor oil, auto fluids, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, televisions, computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, and fax machines. Do not bring business-generated waste, explosives, biohazardous waste, and regular household batteries or small appliances such as microwaves and toasters. For safety products should be kept in their original containers or clearly labeled if not in original container. All lids should be tightly sealed and leaking items placed in larger plastic containers. Proof of Broward County residency is required. For those unable to attend today's event, a free dropoff is available at Broward County's permanent Household Hazardous Waste site at 5601 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., just east of State Rd. 7. DEERFIELD ISLAND PARK / ISLAND BOAT SHUTTLE SERVICE
Saturdays and Sundays, hourly from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For all ages. Free.
Individuals and families wishing to visit the island can catch the shuttle from Sullivan Park (on Riverview Road at the Intracoastal Bridge). The last return shuttle departs the island at 4 p.m. Visitors can walk the park's two trails (trail guide maps are available at the gazebo next to the marina) and enjoy the park's picnic grills and tables. FERN FOREST NATURE CENTER / TEQUESTA INDIANS: SLIDE SHOW AND NATURE WALK

A slide show highlights the history of the Tequesta Indians in Broward County and is followed by a guided nature walk. For more information, call the nature center at 954-970-0150.

LONG KEY NATURAL AREA AND NATURE CENTER / OWL PROWL

For all ages. Fee: $6/person.
Learn about the owls of Florida, then walk through the woods to try to locate a few of the resident owls of the nature center. Bring a flashlight. Preregistration is required by December 17. For further information, call the nature center at 954-327-8797.

SECRET WOODS NATURE CENTER / NATURE TOTS
Thursday, December 17, 10 to
11 a.m.
For ages 2 to 4 accompanied by an adult. Fee: $3/person.
Kids and their parents can join a Broward County Parks naturalist and learn about nature with through stories, songs, arts and crafts, and more. Theme and activities vary each month. Preregistration is required. (This program is also offered at Fern Forest Nature Center on Thursday, December 10 from 10 to 11 a.m.) For further information, call the nature center at 954-791-1030.
