The Parks and Recreation Division is dedicated to providing exceptional services and facilities essential to the quality of life in Broward County while preserving our natural areas.

When the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division was established more than half a century ago, it had neither a mission statement nor much else – a County beach, three undeveloped areas, an annual operating budget of $10,000, and average attendance of 950,000 people per year.

Today our park system has grown to include 18 regional parks, four nature centers, and 21 natural area sites at various stages of completion, for a total of more than 6,500 acres. Our annual operating budget is more than $40 million, and we host an estimated five million visitors per year.

Such growth and expansion have been made possible with broad public support: a $73 million bond issue in 1978, supplemented with state and federal grants; 1989’s $75 million Environmentally Sensitive Lands Bond Issue, used to purchase more than 1,100 acres of the best remaining natural area sites; and the 2000 Safe Parks and Land Preservation Bond Referendum, which authorized $400 million toward preserving and reclaiming remaining natural lands and restoring the aging park system.

Our emphasis throughout has been on diversity of programming and facilities. From aquatics centers to an outdoor target range, from horse stables to campgrounds, from classes for children, adults, and special populations to athletic leagues and one-time special events – you name it, chances are we have it.  We continue to be stewards of the environment by encouraging park patrons to utilize the recycling containers available throughout the parks.

The Parks and Recreation Division has long been committed to the idea that recreation isn’t a luxury, it’s an essential component to the quality of life. Recreation is a valuable commodity, especially in a world where so much else vies for our attention on a daily basis.
