Annual Events at Broward County Parks

Barkapalooza

Barkapalooza LogoBarkapalooza is sponsored by Miami's 97.3 The COAST (WFLC)and the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division.  Barkapalooza is currently scheduled for March 2009 at Markham Park.

Families enjoy two days of fun filled with pet activities for the entire family, including the "barking" children! This is a FREE event for everyone, although the park gate admission of $1.50 per person (except children under age 5) will be in effect.

Some of the activities include:

  • Many rescue groups and animal agencies on hand with homeless companions looking for a family to love!
  • Pet organizations share information on community programs and resources that are available to you and your companion animals.
  • Exhibitors and vendors, plus food and beverages for sale.
  • Activities and leash-free area for your dog.
  • Canine demonstrations and interactive clinics.
  • Canine trainers available for pet behavior questions.

Doggy Splash Days

Coffee enjoys the waterparkEvery October, the water parks close to the humans.  That means the canines can have one weekend of splashing fun in November before the water parks completely close until March.  Canine splash days are traditionally held at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach and C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines.  This year, the doggy fun will expand to include a weekend at T.Y. Park in Hollywood.

Sea Turtles

Summer 2008 Season is currently booked

Four species of sea turtles use South Florida's beaches during the Baby loggerhead turtlespring/summer months to lay and incubate their eggs until the hatchlings emerge 45 to 55 days later. This program, presented by the Sea Turtle Conservation staff from Nova Southeastern University, shares the mysterious life of sea turtles and their fight for survival, and ends with a beach-side release of hatchlings on Wednesday and Friday nights from July through September conducted by naturalists from the Anne Kolb Nature Center. Check the Anne Kolb Nature Center events calendar for exact dates and times or call the naturalists at 954-926-2480.

Walk for Wildlife

Every spring, one Saturday is scheduled at Quiet Waters Park for the SPCA Wildlife Care Center's Walk for Wildlife and Family Festival, usually with a special appearance by Animal Planet's Jeff Corwin. Walkers collect sponsorships for the 1.5-mile walk around the the lake - donations to benefit the SPCA Wildlife Care Center. After the walk, there's a pet-friendly family festival that usually lasts until 3 p.m. with games, demonstrations, food, a leash-free doggy play area, and activities. This year's event was April 19, 2008.  Check out the photos from the event, click here.

Water Matters Day

Unloading the plants for Water Matters DayWater Matters Day, sponsored by the Water Resources Division, is the County's premier water conservation event that serves to inform residents about the regional water system, the need for water conservation, alternative water supply development, and how to conserve water and enhance water quality while creating attractive landscapes that are beneficial for native wildlife. This event is held every March at Tree Tops Park.  Patrons enjoy this event as usually there are free plants for the public.
