Castaway Island K9 Splash at T.Y. Park

Two dogs swimming at T.Y.This is your last chance for a whole year to bring your furry family members to splash and play! 

Guess who’s coming to the Saturday K9 Splash?
Julie Guy of Coast FMJulie Guy, one of Those Two Girls in the Morning from 97.3 The Coast FM!  The popular radio show personality will do a remote broadcast from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 21. There will be games and prizes at the event.

Admission is $3 per dog per 50-minute session, with sessions beginning on the hour. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

First session begins at 9 a.m. - last session begins at 4 p.m. Sessions are 50 minutes long and start at the top of every hour. See photos of last year's event.

Here is the info dog owners need to know before they come to the park:

  1. All dogs must be off leash when inside the facility and free to play in the water park.
  2. Dogs must be sociable and well behaved.
  3. Dogs must show proof of current rabies vaccination and have a current license tag.
  4. Water playgrounds will be closed to humans and open only for dogs (and lifeguards).
  5. The park will provide balls and toys so please don't bring any personal toys.
  6. Donations of pet food or cash will be accepted for the homeless animals at Broward County animal shelters.
  7. Food and beverages, including doggie ice cream, will be available for purchase.
  8. These doggy splash events will go on - rain or shine - although facilities will close if the Thorguard electronic lightning prediction system activates.

Steam Train Rides and Farm Tours at  Tradewinds Park
Steam Train Rides are offered on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the third complete weekend of each month. Rides are available to children and adults alike, and the cost is $1 per ride. 

Tradewinds Educational Farm was developed to reflect the history of farm activities in Broward County and to educate the public about the various types of farm animals native to the area. The TTradewinds farm animal arearadewinds Educational Farm is home to numerous farm animals including a cow, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens. Other animals that can be seen at Tradewinds Park are horses, ponies, and peacocks. Celebrate Broward Recycles Month at the Anne Kolb Nature Center
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be information presented by Broward County's Waste and Recycling Services about the new "All in One" way for Broward residents to recycle.  Children will enjoy prizes from recycled materials, making crafts from recycled materials, creating flower pots for newspaper and running in a recycling relay race.  There will be a special recycling presentation for children at 11 a.m.  For more information, call 954-926-2480.

Cricket BatsmanU.S.A. and Uruguay Rugby Match at Central Broward Regional Park
This match is the home leg of the two-game series with the U.S.A. team having a slim five point advantage.  The game kicks off at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and cost $20 for adults and $10 for children and are available at this website. Check the U.S. A. Holiday Fantasy of Lights at Tradewinds Park
Display at a previous Holiday Fantasy of Light eventTradewinds Park will again be a fantasy of color, lights and design this holiday season. Through the generous efforts of Alzheimer's Family Center, Brandano' Displays, and Coconut Creek. The Holiday Fantasy of Lights, Broward County’s spectacular drive through holiday lighting event is back this year.

The 15th edition of the Holiday Fantasy of Lights, with three miles of giant animated-holiday displays and illuminated trees, is larger than ever blending the favorites of the past and the excitement of new creations by Brandano' Displays.  

The event will open at 6 p.m. daily.  Ticket prices:  $12. per car;
Value-Nites are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when admission is  $9 per car.  $35 is the rate for all buses.  For more information:  Call 954-623-6556 or e-mail. 

Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2009 -- Thanksgiving and Day After Thanksgiving -- All Broward County Parks are officially closed.  However, Holiday Fantasy of Lights at Tradewinds Park will be open both nights and certain operations such as Butterfly WorldSki Rixen, Tennis at C.B. Smith and Brian Piccolo, and All Golf at C.B. Smith may be open.

Lunch-and-Learn Nature Series at the Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park.  This program is designed for adults only and is from noon to 2 p.m. A $5 donation to the Friends of the Anne Kolb Nature Center is requested and a complimentary lunch will be provided.   Today's presentation is about Burmese Pythons and other invasive wildlife threatening the Florida Everglades. Mike Rochford of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences will be our presenter.  Preregistration is required one week in advance of the event by calling the nature center at 954-926-2480.

U.S. Cricket Open at Central Broward Regional Park
US Cricket Open logoThe U.S. Cricket Open will be played in colored clothing and white balls that will be provided by Cricket Council USA, a sports and entertainment management company.  The qualifying field of eight teams will be split into two divisions – American and National.  After a round-robin competition within each division, the best record from each division will play for the Championship and the $10,000 first prize.  For more information, e-mail or call 561-361-1700.

Guided Bird on Deerfield IslandBird Walk at Deerfield Island
This free program is led by nature volunteer Gloria Cashin. The tour is from 8 to 10 a.m.  Pre-registration is required and can be made by calling Quiet Waters Park at 954-360-1315.  Tour space is limited, so early registration is recommended.  Deerfield Island is only accessible by boat. Boat ride to the island is included with the tour.

Natural History Horseback Tour at Tradewinds Park
Take a horseback ride through the park and learn about South Florida plants and animals.  Fee is $45 per person.  Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the ride starts at 9 a.m. This ride is for ages 13 and up and there is a weight restriction for the horses.  For more information, call 954-357-8720.

54th Candy Cane Parade and Hollywood North Beach Park
This City of Hollywood Holiday parade starts at 7 p.m. and will have floats, marching bands, and much more.  This year's parade theme is Bells & Bows on Boardwalk. Although Broward County Parks and Recreation is not the organizer of the event, the final destination for the parade of motorcycles is Markham Park.  This is where the celebration and the collection of toys is located.  As the event date gets closer, it's best to check the organizer's website for details.

Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Collection at the Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park
Broward County residents may drop off for one-day only: paint, solvents, pesticides, household cleaners, lawn and pool chemicals, mercury thermometers, motor oil, auto fluids, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, televisions, computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, and fax machines from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Do not bring business-generated waste, explosives, biohazardous waste, and regular household batteries or small appliances such as microwaves and toasters.

For safety, products should be kept in their original containers or clearly labeled if not in original container. All lids should be tightly sealed and leaking items placed in larger plastic containers. Proof of Broward County residency is required. For those unable to attend today’s event, a free dropoff is available at Broward County’s permanent Household Hazardous Waste site at 5601 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., just east of State Rd. 7. The station is open every Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call the nature center at 954-926-2480 or Broward County Waste and Recycling Services at 954-765-4999.

Krafting with Kay at Secret Woods Nature Center
Ages 9 and up are invited from 2 to 4 p.m. to explore traditional crafts in non-traditional ways.  A $2 per person donation to Friends of Secret Woods is requested.  For information, call 954-791-1030.

Painting in the Park at Secret Woods Nature Center
From 10 a.m. to noon, all artists are invited to join other artists for some plein air fun.  Bring your own paints and art tools, we'll provide the fantastic scenery. For more information, call 954-791-1030.

Tequesta Indians: Slide Show and Nature Walk at Fern Forest Nature Center
All ages are invited to the slide show that highlights the history of the Tequesta Indians in Broward County and then followed by a guided nature walk.  Fee is $3 per person.  For more information, call 954-970-0150.

All ages are invited from 2 to 4 p.m. as local musicians meet for a free unplugged jam session.  Everyone will enjoy the folk, mountain and blue grass music. An Evening With the Stars at Fern Forest Nature Center

Owl Prowl at Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center
All ages are invited to learn about the owls of Florida and then walk through the woods to try and locate a few of the resident owls in the nature center.  Bring a flashlight!  Preregistration is required for this event.  Fee is $6 per person.  To register, call 954-357-8797.

Chip-A-Tree Program Begins Today at 13 County Parks
Don't drag your holiday tree to the curb unless your area has a curbside pickup specifically for yard waste or Christmas trees. Trees are part of nature and are not trash. If your tree goes into the garbage, it becomes waste instead of a recycled treasure for the environment. Specifics on the Chip-A-Tree program.
