Learn to Swim at a Broward County Park
Summer 2008

Offered at C.B. SmithCentral Broward RegionalMarkham, and T.Y. parks.  Registration starts April 21.   Fill out the application (PDF -24KB) on-line, print it, parent/guardian signs, and then take it to the park where you want to take swim lessons.

Course Descriptions

Preschool and Parents
This program is designed for children, ages 2 through 3 years, who have no swimming abilities, are frightened of the water, and cannot jump into the water by themselves. (Children who are not toilet-trained are required to wear disposable swimpants.) Parents participate with their children in the water. The class will focus on water familiarization and the following swimming skills:

Preschool For children ages 3 through 5
Parents must attend the class but will not be allowed in the water. The focus is on water familiarization and the following swimming skills:

  • Rear Float
  • Front Over-arm Strokes
  • Prone Glide

Beginner Level 1
This program is for children 6 through 10 years old. The class objective is to learn the following swimming skills at a Beginner Level I:

  • Front Crawl Arm Stroke

Intermediate Level 2
Students, ages 6 through 10, who have successfully completed the Beginner Level 1 class, or after testing are found to possess the equivalent skills, can join this class that focuses on the following skills at Intermediate Proficiency:

  • Front Crawl
  • Rear Crawl
  • Breaststroke
  • Sidestroke
  • Elementary Backstroke
  • Butterfly Stroke
  • Front Dive

Advanced Level 3
Swimmers, ages 6 through 10, who have successfully completed the Intermediate Level II class, or after testing are found to possess the equivalent skills, can join this class that focuses on the following skills at a Swimmer Proficiency:

  • Learning CPR is part of the program for advanced and adultsFront CrawlRear Crawl
  • Breaststroke
  • Sidestroke

  • Treading Water

Adult
This flexible program, designed for teens and adults, ages 11 and up, teaches participants according to abilities, starting with Beginner Level 1 through Advanced Level 3.  

Session Information
All swim programs meet for eight lessons total. Classes are 30 minutes long and will meet Mondays through Thursdays. Rained-out classes will be made up on Friday. Each session is limited to two rained-out lessons only. Call the park for details.  

Registration Information
Registration for all swimming sessions will be open seven days a week at each of the participating parks and starts April 21. Refer to each park for specific times and locations. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes are subject to cancellation if minimum registration is not attained. Make checks payable to the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. The fee is $48 per session. application  (PDF -24KB) 

Tips for Parents
1. All participants must be dressed and ready to swim at the time classes begin. Parents should bring towels for their children.
2. If you need to feed your child before class, meals should be light. Greasy food, candy, and soda are not recommended.
3. Participants should be in good health. No one with a cough, cold, fever, infection, open sore, or rash, or who looks or acts sick, will be allowed to participate.
4. Parents and family members are encouraged to stay and watch. Please notify a supervisor if you plan to leave the swimming facility during lessons.
5. Pool toys and teaching materials are supplied by the park. We discourage bringing toys and flotation devices of any kind from home.
6. We encourage parents to ask questions or raise concerns.  

Refund Policy
All cancellations or date transfers must be made at least 14 days prior to the first day of class. Cancellations/transfers are subject to a $10 fee. Refund requests must be submitted in writing or by fax to park management and accompanied by the original receipt.
