Natural Areas
Broward County Parks and Recreation Natural Areas provide the public with the opportunity to experience many of the native habitats of South Florida including mesic flatwood, Florida scrub, cypress basins, live oak hammock, wetlands, and archaeological sites. These preserves provide refuge to many species of resident wildlife and migrant visitors. You are invited to visit the natural areas and to take advantage of the many naturalist-led programs offered at a natural area near you. Animal Olympics —
Have fun while learning about the lives of endangered animals by participating in a trail walk to see the evidence of wildlife and competing in a field day Animal Olympics. Two hours.
Indian Pow Wow —
Walk the historic trails of the Tequesta and Seminole Indians and learn what plants and animals they used for food. A gathering of Indian nations in a game-filled pow wow will make learning fun. Two hours.

Deerfield Island Park

The Deerfield Island Story —
Walk along the sandy Coquina Trail (1/2 mile) and discover some of the mysteries of the island. Peer into a gopher tortoise burrow and learn to identify plants by look, smell, and touch. Two hours, includes boat transportation. Group size: minimum 12.
Evolving Habitats —
Witness remnants of the past when freshwater plants lined the Hillsboro Canal. Discover how plants and animals have adapted to living near the intruding salt water along the Mangrove Trail (3/4 mile). Two hours, includes boat transportation. Group size: minimum 12.

Experience the diversity of Florida's natural areas by exploring the following sites: Woodmont , Tall Cypress , Crystal Lake , Hillsboro Pineland , and Highlands Scrub Natural Areas. One hour, $3 per participant. Maximum of 25 participants.

A Walk Through Time —
A hike at Pine Island Ridge , Snake Warrior's Island or Long Key with discussion about natural and cultural history of the area. Topics include geology, Tequesta, Seminole, citrus farming, and native plants. One hour, $2 per participant. Maximum of 25 participants.
