is an award-winning three-month calendar of events offered by the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division's naturalists. The activities listed below offer highlights of what’s going on this month at a park near you. Most activities require fees; some also require preregistration. Call or visit the individual park office as indicated for further information. For a complete list of events, visit our online calendar.

BIRD WALK

DEERFIELD ISLAND PARK

Saturday, April 12, 8 to 10 a.m.

For all ages. Free.

A volunteer-led bird walk. For more information, call the natural area at 954-360-1320.

NATURE LECTURE SERIES

FERN FOREST NATURE CENTER

Sundays, April 20 and 27, and May 4, 2 to 3 p.m.

For all ages. $3/person donation to benefit the Fern Allies.

Lectures last approximately one hour and will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Topics include snakes, spiders, amphibians and reptiles, and dangerous plants, animals, and insects. Live animals will be used to emphasize the lecture topic but there will be no handling of animals by the public. For more information, call the nature center at 954-970-0150.

GUIDED NATURE WALKS

NORTH DISTRICT NATURAL AREAS

By appointment only.

For all ages. Fee: $3/person per hour.

A park naturalist will take groups of 10 or more patrons on a nature walk.

JUNIOR NATURALIST PROGRAM

SECRET WOODS NATURE CENTER

Sunday, April 27, 10 a.m. to noon

For ages 10 to 15 accompanied by an adult.

Fee: $6/person.

Children will learn about various nature-related topics. Preregistration is required. For more information or to preregister, call the nature center at 954-791-1030.

NATURE TOTS

SOUTHWEST DISTRICT NATURAL AREAS

Tuesday, April 22, 10 to 11 a.m.

For ages 2 to 4 accompanied by an adult. Fee: $3/child.

Kids and their parents can join a Broward County Parks naturalist and learn about nature through stories, songs, arts and crafts, and more. This program will also be offered at Fern Forest Nature Center on April 8 and Secret Woods Nature Center on April 15. Preregistration is required. ECOACTION DAY

TREE TOPS PARK

Saturday, April 26, 9 a.m. to noon

For ages 13 and up. Free although the park’s regular weekend and holiday gate entrance fee of $1.50/person (children 5 and under free) will be in effect.

Volunteers clean up trash, plant native plants, and/or remove non-native invasive plants. Students can earn community service hours for graduation and college scholarships, and others can help improve and preserve the environment. Volunteers should dress appropriately with long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes that can get dirty. Participants should bring gloves, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and drinking water. Extra tools such as shovels, rakes, and hand pruners are welcome. A volunteer form must be filled out in order to participate.
