Applications Being Accepted for Master Gardener Program
- Learn the latest in sustainable, “Florida-friendly” landscaping -
WHAT: Broward County Extension Education Section, Parks and Recreation Division, and the University of Florida-Institute of Food & Agricultural Sciences announce the availability of applications to Broward County residents for the next Master Gardener Training Session. The course will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting on September 2 and ending on December 16.
Participants will receive 102 hours of classroom and field training from University of Florida professors, horticulture professionals, gardening specialists, and Dr. John Pipoly, Urban Horticulture Agent. Master Gardeners learn about sustainable, “Florida-friendly” landscaping, including the use of native species, water and soil conservation, best management practices for irrigation, and integrated pest management for homes and landscapes. They will also learn landscape design, maintenance, plant selection, basic botany, native vegetation types, and how to incorporate all of these principles into a sustainable, drought- and hurricane-resistant Florida-Friendly Landscape™. Upon successful completion of the course, Master Gardeners are expected to volunteer in the Extension Education office, answering plant and pest questions for Broward County homeowners, and to participate in municipal and County environmental events. A nominal fee covers the cost of educational materials distributed during the course.
Applications are available by e-mailing sgranson@broward.org or broby@broward.org. Candidates should contact Brenda Roby at 954-370-3725 to schedule interviews, which will be conducted on August 12, 14, 17, 20, 21, and 24 at the Extension Education office, which is also where classes are held.
