Youth Activities and Programs

Broward County Parks and Recreation will once again be offering its very popular summer programs this year. Horse Camp for ages 9-16, Nature Detectives for ages 8-11, and Junior Lifeguard Camp for ages 13-15 are all open for registration. Junior Lifeguard Camp

Junior Lifeguard CampBroward County staff from Splash Adventure at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach will host Junior Lifeguard Camp, Monday through Friday, June 9-13, 2008. Participants will learn CPR and lifeguard training. Other activities will include recreational boating, swim time at Splash Adventure, and field trips. Limited lunch selections are included. Preregistration is required at the park office and starts on April 1, 2008. Space is limited.

Horse Camp

Horse CampSummer Horse Camp, held at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, will begin June 9, 2008, and continue through August 15, 2008. Nine one-week sessions are held Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (There will be no riding on Fridays.)  The week of June 30, there is no camp scheduled due to the Independence Day holiday. Campers must provide their own lunches and refreshments. Long pants and closed shoes are required.   Participamts should also bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a towel. 

In addition to receiving instruction on breeds and colors of horses, appropriate riding equipment, and horse care, students will receive riding lessons and the opportunity to participate in other activities. Fees are $300 per child for each session.

Registration for Summer Horse Camp begins on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at the Tradewinds Stables, Tradewinds Park (north side), 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration will be accepted only on Saturdays and Sundays, with early registration recommended as class size is limited. It is required that fees be paid as well as a Release and Waiver of Liability form be completed and signed, in person, at the time of registration. Mail and/or telephone reservations are not permitted.

Nature Detectives

Nature Detectives

Nature Detectives will be held Monday through Friday, June 23-27, July 21-25, and August 4-8, 2008, at Fern Forest. Fees are $9 per day, and camp lasts from 9 a.m. to noon. Topics and activities will include water, prairie, and forest habitat exploration. Attendance at all five days for any one-week session is recommended. Each of the three one-week sessions covers the same material.

Preregistration is required at the nature center.
