Permitting, Licensing and Consumer Protection Division Announces Lottery for Fuel-Efficient Vehicles-for-Hire Certificates

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners has authorized a lottery to award 10 new taxicab certificates and 5 new luxury sedan certificates for fuel-efficient vehicles. Applicants may apply from November 2 through November 30, 2009.

The lottery for fuel-efficient luxury sedans is open to the general public, that have a place of business in Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach Counties. The vehicles must meet the luxury standard and have average city/highway fuel efficiency of at least 25 miles per gallon. Winners of the luxury sedan certificates must present a vehicle they own or lease for inspection within 150 days of the drawing.

Only current taxicab drivers, who have driven for at least 3 years/36 consecutive months in Broward County, may apply to the lottery for a taxicab certificate. The winning certificates may be used only on vehicles that meet average city/highway fuel efficiency standards of at least 30 miles per gallon.

Applicants must apply in person and pay a nonrefundable lottery application fee of $400 by cash, check or credit card (except American Express). The winning certificates will be drawn in January 2010 at a date to be announced. Winners must pay a new permit fee of $1,000 within 60 days of the drawing.
