Port Everglades Enhances Broward County's Economic Development

The Florida State Legislature established Port Everglades as a deep water harbor in 1927 and dedicated the harbor in 1928. Seaport governance by the Port Authority continued from that point through 1994, when Port Everglades became a department within the Broward County government.

Governed by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the Port has become a major economic engine in the region with a main goal of maximizing economic benefits to the citizens and businesses of Broward County and Florida. For example, Port Everglades is the regional seaport for nine petroleum companies, which sypply gasoline, jet fuel, fuel oil, diesel fuel, propane, aviation gasoline and asphalt to 12 South Florida counties and all three local international airports. In addition, the Port accounts for more than 200,000 jobs throughout the State of Florida, creating more than $18 billion in business activity. The Port has operating revenues exceeding $112 million in FY2007 with total waterborne commerce exceeding 26 million tons in liquid, dry & break bulk cargo and containerized cargo. The Port continues to expand global trade opportunities by attracting additional cruise and cargo business, helping to position the County as a global market leader.

Under the authority of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the Port Everglades Department is operated by numerous divisions. The Port Everglades Administration building, where offices of the Port Director and most divisions are located, is located directly east of I-595 in Fort Lauderdale.
