Wellfield and Environmental Services
As the population of Broward County continues to grow, so does the use of hazardous materials and the potential for contamination of our drinking water supplies. Toxic chemicals from chemical spills can persist for a long time underground and they can travel great distances in the subsurface environment to our public potable water wells.
Our water supplies are dependent on a rain-driven system which feeds the highly
transmissive Biscayne Aquifer that provides raw water for our 41 local water utilities, which in turn, provide water to Broward County residents, visitors, and businesses. Most of our water comes from rainfall and aquifer recharge.
The Wellfield Protection Program has existed in the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) since 1990. It regulates activities in Wellfield protection areas including the storage, handling, use, and production of regulated substances at hazardous material facilities.
