The Environmental Protection Department is responsible for the countywide protection of Broward County's natural resources, and the acquisition of conservation lands and open spaces throughout the County. The agency also responds to reports of pollution and incidents from the general public.
Air Quality Division

The mission of the Air Quality Division is to safeguard human health and the natural environment and to enhance the quality of life in Broward County by protecting and improving overall air quality. In addition, the Division responds to air quality complaints, promotes pollution prevention initiatives and performs asbestos renovation/demolition inspections. The Division is also actively involved in public outreach and education efforts to protect and ensure clean air for the future.
The mission is accomplished through planning for long-term air quality improvements; promoting the use of alternative fuels and transportation modes; evaluating and communicating air quality information to the public; and ensuring compliance with state and local air quality regulations through permitting, compliance assurance, and enforcement.

Biological Resources Division

The mission of the Biological Resources Division is to protect, restore and enhance the biological productivity, abundance and diversity of marine, estuarine, freshwater and terrestrial resources. This is accomplished through land acquisition and preservation, wetland regulations and mitigation, a tree protection ordinance, tree trimming licensing ordinance, beach restoration, beach erosion studies and coral and artificial reef management. The Division also administers the Land Preservation Bond Program, which was approved through referendum in November 2000.

The Development Management Division ensures that the regional impacts of proposed development are addressed through the provision of adequate facilities and services, and that plans for such developments comply with the Land Development Code and the Natural Resource Protection Code.
This division conducts plats development and environmental reviews of construction projects, administers the County's impact fee and concurrency programs, performs traffic impact analysis, and collects information that is used to monitor the County's growth, development and environmental quality. Activities are accomplished through the Environmental Review Services and Development Review Services sections.

Environmental Monitoring Division

This Division is responsible for designing and conducting scientific surveys and investigations, supporting agency efforts in natural resource protection, serving as a countywide environmental laboratory resource, and providing technical and scientific support for other agency functions. Soil, air and water samples are analyzed for contamination using state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Certified by Florida Department of Health and National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC), the lab regularly monitors ambient air and water quality in support of resource management programs.

The Pollution Prevention and Remediation Division ensures the protection of the County’s groundwater resources. It regulates solid waste management facilities, hazardous material facilities and storage tank facilities. The Division manages a program that establishes wellfield protection zones where increased regulatory requirements are enforced. To complement this program, the Division encourages facilities located in wellfield protection zones to utilize pollution prevention practices to minimize or eliminate the use of hazardous materials. The Division operates an after-hours on-call team to respond to resident complaints or environmental emergencies on a 24-hour basis. For sites that have become contaminated with petroleum or chemicals, the Division manages the assessment and remediation of the contamination to protect public health and to return the sites to usable condition.

Water Resources Division is responsible for planning to maintain the continuing availability of adequate water resources for competing uses, including potable water supply and natural systems needs. This division issues licenses with regard to surface water, industrial water and wastewater.
