Convention Center to Host
Governor's 2008 Hurricane Conference
Broward County's Convention Center will host the 22nd annual Governor's Hurricane Conference May 12th - 16th. The conference attracts both public and private sector professionals with emergency management responsibilities.
As of May 3rd, more than 2,500 conference participants have registered, including those from four foreign countries, 30 states and 59 of Florida's 67 counties. The conference is designed to further the knowledge of attendees, including future strategies for hurricane planning, response, recovery and mitigation efforts. Courses and workshops will focus on improving preparedness, response and recovery. For additional information on the conference, visit www.flghc.org
County Plans Hurricane Expo
For Residents on May 31
The third annual Hurricane Expo for residents, sponsored by Broward County, will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Broward County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), 201 N.W. 84th Ave., Plantation. The event is free, including ample public parking.
The expo will feature exhibitors, including businesses, governments and other agencies, who will provide valuable hurricane preparedness information. There will be public tours of Broward's EOC and the Mobile Command Center. In addition to the exhibitors, there will be displays, giveaways and light refreshments. A new feature this year will be scheduled demonstrations throughout the day.
As part of this year's educational and outreach efforts, Broward County will again be mailing copies of the County's official Broward County Hurricane Preparedness Guide to all households in the County before the beginning of hurricane season on June 1. The 12-page, color tabloid features important tips, information, maps, telephone numbers and website addresses. Elected Officials to Meet
On Water Challenges
A workshop with a focus on water supply and water management issues will be held on Monday, May 12, 9:30-11:30 a.m., in Rooms 124 and 125 of the Broward County Convention Center, 1950 Eisenhower Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Public comment at the workshop is encouraged.
The joint workshop will bring together members of the Broward County Commission, the South Florida Water Management District Board of Governors and mayors from many of the County's 31 municipalities.
In Broward County, 30 separate water utilities provide water to the County's estimated 1.8 million residents.
Everglades Holiday Park
Subject of Public Forum
The Broward County Parks and Recreation Division will conduct a public participation forum on Everglades Holiday Park on Wednesday, May 28, 7-9 p.m., Long Key Natural Area, 3501 S.W. 130th Ave., Davie. The meeting is scheduled to provide the public with an opportunity to offer suggestions, voice concerns and ask questions about the recreational needs of Everglades Holiday Park.
Broward County is collecting information related to the park in order to develop a vision of the optimal opportunities for public recreation in the area. The vision must not only reflect the recreational needs of residents and visitors, but also recognize environmental and regulatory constraints, as well as historical concerns. Everglades Holiday Park is a regional Broward County facility, located at 21940 Griffin Road, Southwest Ranches, one-half mile west of US 27.
Adopt Two Felines
For the Price of One
From now until September 30, residents will be able to adopt two cats at the single adoption fee of $74.95.
The adoption fee for both felines includes health exams, vaccinations, feline leukemia/AIDS tests and spaying or neutering. Each cat will also receive a county license. There is a 14-day return policy on all adopted pets.
To take advantage of the special rate, residents are encouraged to visit Broward County Animal Care and Regulation, located at 1870 S.W. 39th St., Fort Lauderdale. Adoption hours are Monday through Friday, 1-6:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Residents can also visit the Broward County Animal Care and Regulation facility in Pompano Beach, 3100 N.W. 19th Terrace (east of Powerline Road between Copans and Sample). Adoption hours are Wednesday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Historical Lunch Program
Looks Back at Celebrity Visitors
The Broward County Historical Commission will present a free "brown bag" luncheon program on Thursday, May 15, noon, Historical Commission Museum, 151 S.W. 2nd St., Fort Lauderdale.
Jack Drury, celebrity publicist and author of Fort Lauderdale - Playground of the Stars, will be in attendance to discuss his book. A PowerPoint presentation will be featured with photos of entertainers and celebrities who have lived, entertained and frequented the Fort Lauderdale area.

Hazardous Waste Drop-off Event
Set for May 18 in Weston
Broward County residents are encouraged to take advantage of a free hazardous waste and electronics drop-off event on Sunday, May 18, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Public Works Complex, 2599 South Post Road, Weston.
Proof of Broward County residency is required. Residents can dispose of household hazardous waste including paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, household chemicals, lawn and pool chemicals, mercury thermometers, propane tanks and fire extinguishers. Acceptable used electronics include televisions, computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, fax machines, cell phones and rechargeable batteries.
