Public Works Department Administration provides management guidance and direction for the operation of the Department as a whole. The Department’s responsibilities include management of the County mobile equipment fleet, provision of a potable water supply and wastewater collection for unincorporated Broward County residents, recycling, and disposal of all solid waste and trash generated in Broward County. The Real Property Section acquires property, provides leasing and property management services, and the Energy and Building Automation Section manages energy-related usage in County facilities and alternative fueled vehicles.

The Construction Management Division consists of a group of design and construction professionals, architects, engineers, and construction managers that direct the planning, design and construction process for new and renovated County facilities.

The Facilities Maintenance Division, consisting of over 200 management, administrative, supervisory, clerical, security, and skilled trades personnel, has established an organization comprised of both public and private concerns with the primary objective of obtaining maximum operating time and use of Broward County facilities and equipment at minimum cost – long range. A key element of this objective is methods and productivity improvements through the development of in-house capabilities, while making the most cost effective use of in-house staff and private contractors.

The Fleet Services Division maintains the County's fleet vehicles, and operates the County's fuel system. The system is controlled by an automated dispensing system. Annually, over 1.5 million gallons of fuel are dispensed to the County's fleet. Broward County is a national leader in the development and use of alternative fueled vehicles. The County operates a fleet of 139 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, 25 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles, and 24 electric (EV) vehicles.

The Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division maintains and improves the County's road and street system, operates drawbridges, and oversees mosquito control operations. The Division is responsible for the Cleaning and Mowing of Rights-Of-Way, Street Patching, Resurfacing, Intersection Improvements, Canal Maintenance and Construction, Guardrail Maintenance, Bridge Maintenance, Street Cleaning, and Stormwater Drainage Installation.

The Highway Construction and Engineering Division oversees project management for major roadway improvement projects and participates in the Land Development Review process. The Division is also responsible for engineering plan review, permitting, and roadway inspection services for improvements to Trafficway roads and County roadways. The Division also provides surveying, design, and project management services for intersection improvement and congestion management projects, as well as support services for other County agencies. Highway Construction and Engineering coordinates and reviews right-of-way deeds, subdivision plats and conducts public records maintenance.

The Traffic Engineering Division provides for the safe and efficient movement of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicular traffic within the County. The Division's main customer base is the public at large and the Broward County business community (e.g. developers, consultants, and contractors).

Seaport Construction and Planning. The seaport's extensive capital improvements program is developed and administered by this division, which has responsibility over strategic planning, architectural and engineering design, harbor maintenance/dredging, construction administration, surveys, engineering records, zoning, building code conformance, land development and a full range of environmental programs, including mitigation, wildlife protection, biological monitoring and environmental permits.

The Waste and Recycling Services offers a comprehensive waste management and recycling system for the residents of Broward County. Through its operation W.R.S. provides community residents with viable methods to waste management issues by offering program solutions which include land filling and waste-to-energy (which creates and supplies electricity to many homes in the area), garbage collection, trash transfer stations, disposal of household hazardous waste, and electronics recycling collection.

Water and Wastewater Services is committed to providing cost-effective water and wastewater management and programs while maintaining the quality of life in Broward County through sound environmental practices. The Division plans, design, and construct facilities to ensure adequate capacity for potable water, sewer and storm water, and provide retail water and sewer services for over 50,000 customers. Water and Wastewater Services is also responsible for pumping, treating and distributing water, as well as providing for collection, treatment, reuse and disposal of wastewater for over 600,000 citizens. The Division is also involved in the operation of waterways, water control structures and well systems to provide flood management ; and canal management services supporting aquifer recharge as well as removal of aquatic vegetation from certain bodies of water throughout Broward County.
