Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)

MRF ConveyorThe Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) located in Davie opened in September 1993 and features a 40,000-square-foot center that processes more than 450 tons of Broward County’s recyclables per day.

The MRF’s operational costs are covered through a surcharge on the disposal fee at the county's Waste-to- Energy plants, state grants, and other funds. Revenues raised from the sale of the materials are returned to participating cities based on the tonnage they deliver. This cooperative agreement gives Broward residents a great opportunity to recycle in a cost-effective way!

The Magic of Recycling

MRF Tipping Floor-Recyclable materials are picked up by recycling trucks from homes.

-Once at the MRF, the trucks are weighed and the contents are dumped onto the tipping floor where the materials are picked up by a conveyor belt.

-Employees monitor and remove non-recyclable materials from the belts.

-As the mixed recyclables continue, a powerful magnet pulls out steel, tin and metals and sends them out for compacting and shipping to steel mills.

-Plastic and aluminum are separated from glass and shipped to market. Glass is crushed and shipped out for remanufacturing.

-Cardboard, magazines and other miscellaneous paper materials arePackaged Recyclables separated from newspaper and shipped out. Newspaper is baled and sent to recycling markets.

-New products are created from recycled materials, purchased by consumers and recycled again.
