Frequently Asked Questions

Q: If I register, will my privacy be respected, and if so how?

A: When you register, you must consent to give your authorization to release medical information contained in the registration form to Broward County cities, emergency management agencies, hospital districts, and private social service agencies for the purpose of evaluating your needs and possibly providing emergency transportation and sheltering. Records relating to registration of disabled citizens are exempt from the provisions of Florida Statute 119.07 (1), Public Records Law. The information contained will be kept confidential.

E-mail addresses are public records under Florida law and are not exempt from public records requirementson the registration form. If you do not want your e-mail address to be subject to being released pursuant to a public records request, do not enter an email address. When you register the email address field is optional.

Q: How will the information in the Registry be used?

The information in the Vulnerable Population Registry will be used primarily for planning purposes. Each city will have the ability to obtain reports for those registrants in their respective city. Depending on the city, the information may be requested for use by emergency responders for the purpose of evaluating your needs.

Q: Do I need to register every year?

A: No. You only have to register once. If you move, or no longer want to be included in the database, please contact the Broward County Call Center at 954-831-4000 to have your registration updated or deleted.

Q: What is the difference between the Vulnerable Population Registry and the Special Needs Registry?

A: The Vulnerable Population Registry is for residents that are at risk due to a disability, frailty or health issue, regardless of age, AND elect to stay at home in the event of a hurricane or other disaster. Registration information will be used for planning purposes only. Registration does not guarantee that you will be provided assistance.

If you have a special medical need, you are strongly encouraged to register to stay at a Broward County Special Needs Shelter during a hurricane. Registration should be in advance, before a storm threatens. To register for a Special Needs Shelter and/or transportation to the shelter, call Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services Division at 954-537-2888 or TTY 954-537-2882. There are some limitations, so be sure to inquire about your specific situation when you call to register.

Q: Who can I call if I have a question?

A. You can call the Broward County Call Center at 954-831-4000 or TTY 954-831-3940.
