Resource Recovery System

The Resource Recovery System is an integrated approach to solid waste management that includes waste-to-energy plants, recycling and landfilling.

In 1987 an Interlocal Agreement between Broward County and 23 county cities created the Broward Solid Waste Disposal District. The District, headed by the Resource Recovery Board, made Broward County responsible for disposal of all solid waste delivered by haulers from the participating cities and the unincorporated areas of the County. The Resource Recovery Board, which is composed of elected city officials and County Commissioners, controls the waste flow, monitors the development and operation of the County disposal system, and establishes fees.

The Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) advises both the Resource Recovery Board and the County. TAC is comprised of city and county staff, representatives of private waste haulers, recyclers, and environmental interests.
