Mission Statement: Working together to provide for the safe and efficient movement of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicular traffic within the County.
The Division's main customer base is the public at large and the Broward County business community (e.g. developers, consultants, and contractors).
The Division's office hours are: Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 5:00 pm
Organization: In order to accomplish its stated mission, the Traffic Engineering Division is organized into seven sections. These are Management and Administration, Planning & Design, Signal Systems, Signal Construction & Maintenance, Signs & Markings, Traffic Studies, and Special Projects. We also maintain signs and signals on a twenty-four (24) hour, seven (7) days a week basis.
Broward County provides traffic engineering services to the majority of the cities and all of the unincorporated areas for Broward County. Our services are provided to the Cities through Traffic Engineering agreements with 27 of the 30 municipalities. Three of these agreements are modified, i.e. where the County is responsible for providing traffic engineering services on certain roadways. All other municipalities have full agreements which transfer traffic engineering functions on all public streets and roadways to the County's Traffic Engineering Division. The municipalities which have modified agreements are Coconut Creek, Plantation and Wilton Manors. The municipalities which have no traffic engineering agreements are Lazy Lake, Hillsboro Beach and Southwest Ranches.
The Planning & Design Section performs traffic reviews of new development projects as mandated by The Broward County Land Development Code, additionally, the section performs technical reviews of roadway construction projects, pavement marking and signing plans for Broward County, municipal road projects, and required improvements by developers.
The Signal Systems Section operates and maintains a County-wide computer controlled traffic signal system to protect motorists and pedestrians, reduce motorist travel time and aid in the efficiency of roadways. The section is responsible for the design of new signals and the evaluation of signal timing and phasing.
The Signal Construction & Maintenance Section is responsible for the installation and maintenance of traffic signal systems, and the maintenance of roadway lighting on selected roadways.
The Signs & Markings Section is responsible for the fabrication, installation and maintenance of signs and pavement markings.
The Traffic Studies Section conducts traffic studies and investigations to improve safety and traffic circulation for the motoring public. Various types of traffic data are collected and analyzed in the performance of these studies and are available to the public. These include turning movement counts, traffic volume counts, delay studies, speed studies and crash studies analyses.
The Special Projects Section is responsible for the School Safety Program and Neighborhood Enhancement Programs. The School Safety Program manages all school safety issues including walking and biking students and vehicular traffic flow around public, private, special and charter school sites. This program also encompasses the Certified Adult School Crossing Guard Program. The Neighborhood Enhancement Program covers the unincorporated area's Traffic Management, residential street lights and sidewalk enhancement programs.
Information Available: A variety of traffic engineering data is collected. This data includes information relevant to traffic control devices such as timing for traffic signals, traffic signal maintenance records, and traffic sign and pavement marking installation and maintenance reports. Other information includes volume counts, pedestrian counts, speed counts, crash analyses or traffic related data concerning land use and development projects. The above information can be disseminated by mail or fax. The response time is determined by the scope and volume of information requested, and can range from one hour to three weeks. Parties interested in specific traffic data should contact the Division for further information.
Services: In areas where Broward County has jurisdiction, the Traffic Engineering Division is responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of signals, signs and pavement markings. The Division also sets traffic regulations, parking restrictions and turn restrictions on the County's roadway system and the residential streets of the unincorporated areas. The Division continually works on traffic synchronization plans, with many municipalities to improve traffic flow.
