Traffic Engineering Division
School Safety Program

Traffic Engineering is responsible for pedestrian and vehicular safety around public, private, special and charter schools within Broward County, based on the Traffic Engineering Agreements with each of the municipalities, which determine our level of involvement.

State Statute 316.1895 describes the requirements for the "Establishment of School Speed Zones, Enforcement; Designation". This statute delegates to the governing body of each county and municipality in the state, and the Department of Transportation and each county and municipality in the state shall install and maintain such traffic and pedestrian control devices in conformity with such uniform system.

The components of this program include "Designated Safe Walk Routes" and "Traffic Patterns". Traffic patterns, as they relate to school staff, school busses, parents and students are evaluated and modified, when necessary, to facilitate safety at all schools. Designated pick-up/drop off areas have been established on-site to ensure the safety of students.

Traffic Engineering staff member(s) attend PTA, parent advisory, and school safety meetings, as requested, to discuss safety issues along with any proposed changes. Staff coordinate with each school, and local municipality Engineering and Police Departments, during major road projects to maintain and/or alter designated safe walk routes on a temporary basis.

Staff installs and maintains school signage, flashers, and pavement markings around each school for the safety of students and motorists.

Traffic Engineering staff member(s) sit on the School Board's Traffic Safety Committee. This committee was established in 1985 to bring together various agencies and parent groups to discuss traffic safety issues at local schools.

The school safety program is handling a number of large, long term projects:

  • Converting selected ground mounted electrical school flashers to Solar Power flashers.
  • Converting selected school zone signage (stationary signs) to either ground mounted or overhead school flashers.
  • The installation of "SCHOOL" pavement marking messages in advance of all major school crossings, throughout the County.
