Volunteers in the News
Markham Park Nature Trail Planting Project
An amazing group of 21 volunteers showed up on October 14 for the Motorola Day of Service project at Markham Park in Sunrise and proved to be dynamos!
Here’s what they accomplished:
• 349 plants were planted, including 20 seven-gallon trees.
• 12 backpacks of weed killer were sprayed.
• More than 50 10-foot-tall invasive trees were pulled with weed wrenches and shovels.
In addition to the 21 Motorola employees, Parks and Recreation staff from Long Key Nature Center, Tree Tops Park and the Markham Park Nursery made the Markham Park Nature Trail Planting Project a success.

County Volunteers Collect 7,000 Pounds of Trash During Annual Coastal Cleanup
On Saturday, September 19, more than 2,400 people volunteered their time to help clean the beaches in Broward County as part of the Ocean Conservancy's 24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup. Broward County staff from the Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department worked with local municipalities and collected more than 7,000 pounds of trash that ranged from baby toys to biohazardous waste. An estimated 82,000 pieces of trash were picked up with the number one trash item being cigarette butts. Over 34,000 butts cleaned from the beaches and one site, which combined all the cigarette butts collected by the volunteers, filled a bag that weighed 10 pounds. Posted October 14, 2009

Volunteer Broward Coordinates Comcast Cares Day at
County Park
Volunteer Broward recently conducted a day of “greening” for the Comcast
Corporation’s Comcast Care Day, an annual event Comcast conducts in communities
in which they provide service. In 2009, Comcast employees chose a “Go Green”
project and picked Reverend Samuel Delevoe Park as the ideal location.
During their greening event, 445 Comcast volunteers arrived between 5 and 7
a.m. and worked until almost 3 p.m. They planted a butterfly garden, cleaned
trash from the waterways, added mulch to the fitness stations and planted
flowers and shrubs on the south side of the lake.
Adopt-A-Street provided activities for the children of Comcast employees.
Local nurseries donated more than 1,000 plants and Markham Park supplied the
mulch. Volunteer Broward donated the tools and carefully coordinated project
leaders, training and scheduling of the workday. All of this occurred without
any cost to the County. August 2009
Horse-Loving Twins Win Silver Cord
Award
In the four years that twins Ashley and Courtney
Harvey have volunteered to work at the Tradewinds Park Stables,
they have amassed a staggering 3,500 hours. Courtney earned the
highest amount of volunteer hours in the history of Marjory
Stoneman Douglas High School, just short of 2,000. Her sister,
Ashley, has earned 1,500 hours at the park. The sisters were
awarded the Silver Cord award for their service to the
community.
Now 19 the girls plan to apply the knowledge and experience
they’ve acquired at Tradewinds to attend the Meredith Manor
International Equestrian Centre in West Virginia. Both girls have
long-range plans to start their own riding academy.
Park Volunteer Earns State
Award
Julie Grady, who has been volunteering at Plantation Heritage Park
since 1984, has put in an astounding 17,000 hours of service. Her
tasks vary: she washes the park’s rental boats, plants flowers or
assists staff with a variety of program needs. Her efforts have not
gone unnoticed as she has been recognized by the Florida Recreation
and Park Association with the Voluntary Service Award.
